I used to feel bad that I missed out on seeing any of the female folk heavyweights of the 1970s and 80s––Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, among others––sing live. Luckily, last night’s virtuoso performance by Scottish (“the West coast of Scotland!”) singer-songwriter Andi Neate proved the perfect antidote to my folk-hero regret. Neate channels these long-haired guitar goddesses in a set that evokes wistful nostalgia for past loves and better times while remaining utterly modern. With a fetching set of long, raven braids and a punk rock tattoo, this down-to-earth cutie pie keeps her feet on the floor, her heart in heartbreak and her voice fairly near to heaven.
