Bohemian CarnevaleRenewing and reviving its Shrovetide festival tradition, Prague gets ready to throw a six-day party

Think "carnival" and you probably don't think of Prague in February. But in the days leading up to Lent, the Czech lands have traditionally celebrated Masopust -- a last chance to eat meat and party before the fasting begins. While some Prague districts have revived the traditional celebration, the City of Prague itself has been without a Shrovetide festival -- until now. Reviving and renewing those traditions, from Thursday, February 15th through Tuesday, February 20th, Prague is home to the Bohemian Carnevale. The innaugral festival is centered on the Old Town's baroque Clam-Gallas Palace (Clam-Gallasův palác), where the bulk of this year's events take place. As home to Salón 7, the "carnival studio," the 17th century palace will house an interactive exhibition of masks and costumes throughout the festival, plus a varied line-up of other happenings. Under the Galacticos heading, for instance, Clam-Gallas is expected to play host to hairdressers, fashion designers and other stylists, all eager to get you looking your best for the festivities. Kids get to join the fun too, when Minimax, a Czech TV station for children, organizes a "Children's Room" (Dětský kabinet) on Saturday, February 17th and Sunday, February 18th. Outside the palace, the organizers are planning not one but three carnival parades. The first, from Clam-Gallas Palace to Old Town Square and back again, opens the festival on Thursday, February 15th. The second, known as Divertimento Furioso, takes to the streets of downtown Prague on Saturday, February 17th. And the third and final parade, on "Fat Tuesday" itself (February 20th), precedes the Theatrum Mundi closing party. For the duration of the festival, many of Prague's finest restaurants will also be getting involved, offering special Bohemian Carnevale menus. The participating restaurants are: • Bellevue • Cowboys Steak & Cocktails • Four Seasons Hotel Prague • La Provence Restaurant & Brasserie • Mlýnec • Radisson SAS Alcron Hotel • Restaurace Lví dvůr • Restaurace Pálffy Palác Club • Restaurant U Malířů • Restaurant V Zátiší • Ristorante Amici Miei • Square • Sovovy mlýny For further information, and a more detailed program of events, see the official Bohemian Carnevale website. |
