Goran Bregović and his Wedding and Funeral Band with Choir March 31st from 8pm, Prague Congress Center With roots in the Balkans, where he comes from, and his head in the 21st century, which he fully inhabits, Goran Bregovic's music marries the sounds of a gypsy brass band with traditional Bulgarian polyphonies; the electric guitar with traditional percussion and a curious rock accent -- all against the backdrop of a bedeviled string orchestra and the deep sonorities of a male voice choir -- creating music that our soul recognizes instinctively and the body greets with an irresistible urge to dance. He was born in Sarajevo to a Serbian mother and a Croatian father. After a few years studying violin at a conservatory, Goran forms his first group, "The White Button," at the age of 16. He becomes a composer and guitarist. At the end of the '80s, Bregovic takes time out from this permanent hustle and bustle to compose music for the Emir Kusturica film Time of the Gypsies. Coming from the same background, the same generation, and being survivors of the same experiences, Bregovic and Kusturica form a partnership in which words aren't needed to communicate. After Time of the Gypsies, Goran has a free hand to compose the original soundtrack for Arizona Dream. The music lives up to the film -- poetic, original and incredibly uplifting. Patrice Chereau entrusts him with the music for La Reine Margot, Palme d'Or-winner at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. Goran delivers a majestic piece with rock accents. The music for Emir Kusturica's Underground, a Palme d'Or-winner at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, was also written by Goran. Recently Goran composed spicy music, with a klezmer flavor, for Radu Mihaelanu's film Train de Vie, which was acclaimed by the critics in Venice, Sao Paulo, Berlin and by the public wherever it was shown. He has since devoted himself to the interpretation of his own music and embarked on the second stage of his career -- without completely abandoning the movies, however. For over 10 years, since he abandoned pure rock in 1985, Bregovic's music has never been performed live. This all changes in 1995 when, with a band of 10 traditional musicians, a choir of 50 singers and a symphony orchestra, he undertakes a series of mega-concerts in Greece and Sweden followed by a concert on October 26th at the Forest National of Brussels for an audience of 7,500. 1996 saw very few concert performances, as the idea of 120 performers on stage scared even the most enthusiastic promoters. In June 1997, the group is reduced to 50 musicians for a two-hour concert of music Bregovic has composed for films. And it's one success after another. Bregovic undertakes a triumphant tour through Europe with his Wedding and Funeral Band presenting his most beautiful pieces live, among them the famous Ederlezi (Time of the Gypsies), In the Death Car (Arizona Dream), and the energetic Kalashnikov (Underground), with the delirious audience echoing Bregovic's powerful cries of "Juris!" ("Charge!"). The number of people attending -- between 3,500 and 10,000 per concert -- and the concert given May 1st at the Piazza St. Giovanni in Rome, in front of an audience of 500,000, confirm beyond any doubt that his music now has a real impact on an international level. Goran Bregovic continues his career, and the local rock hero of the '70s and the '80s asserts his authority as a mature, successful, international composer.
