Goran Bregović and his Karmen (With a Happy End)

The icon of balkan music– Goran Bregovic comes back with his Orchestra to present us his new amazing show, “Karmen (with a happy end).”

“Karmen” was premiered in Italy on April 17 2004 and stole hearts of the critics and the audience. Since that time it has been shown all over the world. This Christmas “Karmen” will visit Prague.

Bregovic’s music is unique. Roots in the Balkans where he stems from, head in the 21st Century which he fully inhabits, Goran Bregovic's music marries sounds of a gypsy brass band with traditional Bulgarian polyphonies, those of an electric guitar and traditional percussion with a curious rock accent…. all against a background of a bedevilled string orchestra and deep sonorities of a male choir, creating music that our soul recognises instinctively and the body greets with an irresistible urge to dance.

Bregovic’s “Karmen (with a happy end)” is not a copy of Bizet’s “Carmen”. It actually doesn’t have much in common, however Bregovic reminds us about the original from time to time with some caribbean rhythms and jazz arrangements.  It is a story about weddings and funerals, with characteristic for Gypsies happy ending.

Karmen is a love story about Cleopatra, the gypsy fortune teller and a garbage man Bakia. It’s full of extreme emotions: jealousy, happiness, fight, desire. The audience gets all these emotions through the strong stream of music: unusual, passionate, composed of the rhythms of different epochs. Being there you can feel the amazing power, that Bregovic puts in his music. He can connect everything in such a perfect way that sounds getting inside take us into another world.

The opera has rhythm and elements of traditional Balkan melody. It was composed in a such way, that typical wedding – funeral orchestra can play it. It contains all that what Bregovic is loved for – fusion of ethnic music with pop, rock and other styles. It is a masterpiece. Wonderful music is fulfilled with a perfect acting. Vaska Jankovska – playing the leading role – amazes with her strong voice and feminine dance .

Gypsy opera “Karmen (with a happy end)” this December in Prague.
