Prague has a very vibrant theatre community with a long tradition of quality children’s theatre. Avoid the ubiquitous “Black Light” tourist traps, however: Most of these shows are dreadfully dull and over-priced. Instead, head to the newly constructed Divadlo Minor at Vodičkova 6. The quality of performances is generally very good both from their own company and from the host of other groups that perform there. While most of the performances are in Czech, they’re usually pretty lively and full of more than enough music, clowning and puppetry to keep children very entertained (Kids aren’t usually as bothered as adults that they can’t understand the text.) The design of the theatre is an absolute delight and includes a café and a fantastic children’s play area. Also recommended and newly re-constructed is Švandovo Divadlo na Smichově, near Anděl, at Štefánikova 57. Most weekends, they have excellent children’s performances. In particular, keep an eye out for performances by Buchty a loutky, an energetic, exciting and predominantly non-verbal theatre company that ranks among the country’s best. Employing live music and huge, magnificent puppets, this troupe rarely fails to provide solid and surprising shows. If your child understands Czech, there are weekend matinee performances in a large number of theatres - check the Přehled kulturnich pořadu v Praze for times and details. Divadlo Spejbla a Hurvínka at Dejvická 38 in Prague 6, is a theatre dedicated to the much-loved puppets Spejbl and Hurvínek and is also definitely worth a look, even if your Czech is limited.
