What is Music on Film - Film on Music? The inaugural Music on Film - Film on Music (MOFFOM) festival brings together a variety of audiovisual projects "where film meets music and music meets film." For the most part, this involves films about music and musicians, plus an accompanying program of special events. The selection process generally favors films that are relatively unknown in the Czech Republic. When is the festival taking place? The 2004 festival officially opens, with a screening of the film Twist, on the night of Thursday, October 14th. Events open to the general public run from Friday, October 15th through Sunday, October 17th. Where will the festival be taking place? The 2004 festival has three main venues: The Lucerna passage (including the Kino Lucerna cinema) will host events for all four days of the festival. The two theatres of the nearby Kino Světozor arthouse cinema will host screenings on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th. And NoD, a multifunctional space above the Old Town's Roxy club, will host screenings on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th. How many films will be shown? More than 30 feature-length music films will be screened at the festival, plus eight TV documentaries, and a selection of video-clips from around the world. As mentioned above, there'll be a varied accompanying program of special events at Lucerna, ranging from live music to Bollywood dance lessons to an exhibition of movie photos and cinema posters. See the official site for more details. By happy coincidence, the run of the 2004 festival also coincides with two major (though unrelated) concerts at Lucerna. Rock 'n' roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis plays Lucerna's great hall on Thursday 14th while James Brown- and George Clinton-affiliated saxophonist Maceo Parker plays Lucerna Music Bar on Sunday 17th. What are the likely festival highlights? The Commercial Album DVD - a collection of one-minute films parodying advertising, put together by cult American band The Residents - receives its world premiere at the festival. Another highlight promises to be the screening of the silent classic Nosferatu, accompanied by live music from underground Czech band DG 307. There will also be a screening of Mutiny: Asians Storm British Music, a documentary about the UK's Asian Underground phenomenon, attended by DJ Anjali, who features in the film. There'll also be a Czech premiere for American Rebel, a documentary about communist-friendly cowboy Dean Reed, and a European premiere for Come See About Me, a DVD documentary about blues legend John Lee Hooker. On the live music front, one highlight promises to be Il Parto Delle Nuvole Pesanti, an "ethno-rock" band from Calabria, Italy known for its theatrical performances. Can I enter my own film in the festival? MOFFOM isn't accepting films this year but the organizers plan to open future festivals to entries. But the Open Screen Free Showcase, held in Lucerna Music Bar on Friday 16th, offers would-be filmmakers the chance to have their own short music-related film screened. Films must be in DVD or VHS format and no longer than 15 minutes. Will any special guests be coming to Prague for the festival? Several. The two main guests are American documentary filmmaker Allan Miller and Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann Miller, best known for films exploring the classical music world, has two films at the festival: John Cage: I Have Nothing To Say And I'm Saying It and The Turandot Project. Mann, whose documentaries include Grass (about marijuana), Comic Book Confidential (comic artists), Imagine The Sound (free jazz) and Poetry In Motion (poets), presents Twist, his 1992 film about rock 'n' roll dancing at the festival. Other guests include the UK's Robert "Bob" Balser, the animation director on the Beatles film Yellow Submarine; Czech actress/singer Věra Křesadlová, presenting the 1963 Miloš Forman film Konkurs (Audition); and Senegalese singer Omar Ka, who will introduce the documentary Rastaman Never Die Only Sleep and also play live in the Lucerna passage. How much does it cost? Tickets for individual screenings at Lucerna or Světozor cost 95 Kč full-price or 85 Kč for concessions. Tickets for individual screenings at NoD cost 100 Kč. Festival passes are also available, allowing entry to up to four screenings per day. For a four-day pass, the cost is 700 Kč (or 550 Kč for concessions).
