2012It's the end of the world as we already know it in Roland Emmerich's latest blockbuster

Written and Directed by Roland Emmerich Starring John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt and Chiwetel Ejiofor Website: http://www.whowillsurvive2012.com/ 2012 is just another entertaining but generic disaster movie, with an approach similar to other Emmerich films such as Independence Day (1996) or The Day After Tomorrow (2004). The film explores the idea of a global doomsday event coinciding with the end of the Mayan Long Count Calendar's current cycle, on or around the northern hemisphere's winter solstice in 2012. The IHC (Institute for Human Continuity), a secret organization, has become aware of the situation and has begun constructing vast arks beneath the Himalayas to save both the human race and significant animal species when the end finally comes. There are arguments, however, over how and when the world's governments will alert citizens, and how the remaining survivors will be selected to survive Armageddon. When they discover that a global cataclysm, caused by the a polar shift, will occur faster than expected, they must race to these ships in order to save the human race before all is lost. A group of survivors, including Jackson Curtis (Cusack) and his family, must fight their way to China before they can board the great arks and save themselves from the gigantic tidal waves sweeping across the Earth. The film goes through every American film cliché: Cusack as a father so busy with his job that he has no time to dedicate to his children; Danny Glover as an idealistic American president; Ejiofor as the man who cares about people's rights; Platt as the man who cares only about himself; and Woody Harrelson as a man who saw it all coming but was thought crazy. However, the story maybe isn't so important in this type of film, where the main characters are the special effects. These are well done, but sometimes you feel as if you're watching a videogame rather than a film. In short, 2012 is another film about Americans saving the world -- not intellectually enriching, perhaps, but a fun way to spend an evening. Rating: 3 out of 5 Czech Premiere: Thursday, November 12, 2009 Czech Title: 2012 Runtime: 2 hours, 38 minutes Prague Movie Times for 2012 |
