If music were a side dish, enchiladas supremas would be served with a barking Chihuahua and the strumming of five oversized and oddly-shaped guitars from beneath a tasseled sombrero. Fettuccini, linguini, and tortellini would be dressed with the creamy call of the gondolier and the flying wheezing gasps of the accordion; cymbals and sitars would spice humus and couscous; seafood would be dipped in a lemon garlic gull squawk tug toot and washed down with a symphony of oceanic proportions. Burgers, dogs, beer, and pizza would be incomplete without the clang of a marching band and a cheering audience 23,000 strong. And so it was that the official opening celebration of Prague’s first Mongolian Barbecue matched mountains of spicy layered meat to the horseback heavy beats of house deejays. Dubbed “meat n’ beat,”, the evening presented, simply and elegantly, the primal essentials of a good time: food, drink, music and dance, and an appropriate place in which to enjoy them. At the door, jungle-printed hostesses of impressive stature and beauty invited guests to a glass of wine or port, fine accompaniments to the initial tour of the recently renovated restaurant space. A continually replenished serving table in the corner of the room was the scene of an abundance of heaping honey-sweetened beef, curried chicken and fiery pork ...; of sauces dill sauces garlic sauces; of platters of rice, oven baked potatoes and fries; of refreshing tomato-heavy salads; and of a variety of enticing desserts irresistible to even the most devout and well-fed of carnivores. Entertainment was equally appealing, despite the Dara Rollins no-show. DJ Tvyks, accompanied instead by Charlie One, provided the soundtrack to about an hour of the night’s festivities, accompanied by a matching pair of white-clad dancers experienced in keeping up with the speed of his spun beats. DJ Luger followed Tvyks to continue with the seamless sonic tapestry being woven while meat-filled bellies digested. Live saxophone played by Ivan M added an even greater variety to the entertainment of the evening. Stripped of unnecessary frivolity and fuzziness, the event was an evening of ritualistic purity evoking the archetypal image of the tribal campfire for those wishing to free themselves of the often cumbersome trivialities of life’s day-to-day for a rhythmic dose of good fun. About the Restaurant Located in the basement spaces of Slovanský Dům (Na Příkopě 22, Praha 1) next to the multiplex, Mongolian Barbecue offers the first all-you-can-eat feasting experience in Prague. Based more on the communal nature of Mongolian feasting than on strict reproductions of Mongolian dishes, the restaurant follows a model that developed in the States and has found success all over the world. Owners of Prague’s Mongolian Barbecue were impressed with MB restaurants during their travels and worked closely with the Budapest MB in establishing their restaurant. Of a total of 50 unique meat marinades, sixteen are available on any given day. The marinades have been adapted to suit the Czech palate (an important step in menu preparation adhered to in every country) and are presented raw. Visitors are invited to select any combination and amount desired. Food is then prepared on large grills in full view of the public. Side dishes, salads and desserts are also plentiful. The end result is an eating experience that allows a greater amount of diner participation than at a typical restaurant. The evening feast from 4:00 p.m. to midnight teems with a variety of soups, salads, vegetables, main courses and desserts for 444 CZK. A selection of bottomless beverages is covered in the price, including beer and an impressive assortment of high quality French and Spanish wines. The Midday feast served from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. provides the same for a reduced price of 299 CZK. The introduction of a lower-priced lunch feast for people working in the area is expected soon. The build- your- own- buffet nature of the feast accommodates groups of all sizes but is ideal for the hardy and hungry with a bit more time on their hands. Food is prepared in the upper portion of the restaurant, and while large and spacious tables that are large and spacious (complete, even, with real cotton tablecloths) seat 180 guests in the vaulted lower portion of the restaurant. As was evidenced last December when the Mongolian Barbecue was rented almost nightly for Christmas parties, the size, atmosphere and food, at the MB make it an ideal location for larger office functions. A secluded lounge set that seats 20 can be used for more private gatherings, birthdays, etc. In addition to providing Prague with an unusually exciting dining experience, owners of Mongolian Barbecue desire to return the music to Slovanský Dům by organizing and hosting musical events of a varied nature. Plans to work with local deejays DJs and radio stations to entertain the Prague public with monthly events are in preparation. As an all-you-can-eat establishment of Mongolian specialties, the Mongolian Barbecue and Mongolian Bar provides Prague denizens with MORE meat for MORE people!
