Fringe review: CassandraDeep down with Cassandra

Divadlo Inspirace is a deep-down-underground space - like the one referred to in the play Cassandra. The atmosphere was good, the actors strong and the costumes and set excellent. Why, then, did the play fail to convince me? Cassandra is an abstract exploration of the character of Cassandra of Troy (as my better educated companion had to inform me after the show). She is a seer who prophesies the destruction of the city by an enemy within. This much was apparent in the play. I am willing to take some of the blame for my own ignorance, but still, the play lacked sufficient interesting material to truly engage an audience. Both actors handled the dialogue with ease and comfort, and at times their movement was beautiful to watch. However, the play was divided into far too many short scenes - each with similar physical transitions - and never really achieved a flow. There were moments where the dialogue did resonate, and touched intriguingly on questions of politics, fate and responsibility. It is a pity that the play did not succeed in examining these in greater detail. Read more Fringe reviews...
