Fringe review: 40 Feathered WinksA visual and musical explosion...

A visual and musical explosion of carefully choreographed creativity, this beautiful show starts with an alarm clock and the slow, reluctant emergence of the characters from bed. The beds and the characters' relationships with - and within - these beds are at the heart of a delightful and perceptive exploration of humanity. According to Paperbirds' publicity material, the inspiration for the piece came from research which said that we spend one third of our lives in bed. One third of our lives sleeping, dreaming, reading, making love (sometimes concurrently to hilarious effect), dying, crying... - some of the most profoundly human experiences happen to us in bed. he ensemble of actors is physically precise and completely in harmony. The piece is devised and I certainly felt that the actors had complete ownership of the scenes and characters. It is a series of smoothly connected vignettes - funny, tragic, raw and delightful by turns - which examine some of our bedridden experiences. Jemma Mc Donnell, the director (and also one of the five actors), managed to craft these separate vignettes into one coherent, perfectly timed piece. The dramatic arcs of the different scenes complemented each other. I was in tears more than once and had a smile on my face all the way through. It ended beautifully, but too soon. It is just what it should be. Don't miss it. Read more Fringe reviews...
