Fringe review: ForgottenA truly extraordinary piece of theatre

From the moment Pat Kinevane enters the beautifully atmospheric space at Kostel Sv. Jana Kritele Na Pradle, it is clear that this actor is in control. His compelling physical presence demands the audience's complete attention and, later, empathy. With a light touch, Kinevane slides between four different characters, all aged between 80 and 100, all painted with utterly believable colour. There is a gloriously energetic Cork woman who enjoys testing products at cosmetic counters on Saturdays. There is graceful Dora, who poignantly recalls past love. There is Flor, whose haunting cry of "Don't touch my buttons I'll bath myself" echoed in the theatre space to a stunned silence. The only character who failed to convince was Gustus - the only one who relied on a previously recorded voice. The acoustics in the church are bad, and it was difficult to distinguish words even when live. Kinevane is brilliant, his face and eyes full of the life - and approaching death - of his characters. The piece is woven together by Kabuki-inspired movements and an extraordinarily varied soundtrack. On paper the combination might not work, but actually the stylised tragedy of the Kabuki movement dovetailed with Kinevane's often humourous take on the characters. Director Jim Culleton of Fishamble theatre and the outstanding Pat Kinevane have put together a truly extraordinary piece of theatre. Read more Fringe reviews...
