Tired of being a wasteful, polluting slob? There's a better way, and it involves showering less often too! Learn some interesting facts about global warming and being green in Prague right here! Turn those extra pounds of garbage into broken shards of glass, melted plastic goo, and abrasive toilet paper that irritates your butt -- and enjoy it all in a click-friendly style! The mainstream media used to have to be pretty desperate for news before it covered environmental issues. I've read more articles about small-town America bake sales than about the quickly degenerating state of the planet But 2007 started with a bang for people who enjoy reading doomsday articles about a future involving toxic air, orange rivers, and nuclear testicles. On February 2nd, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of approximately 3,000 experts representing over 100 countries, issued their first report since early 2001. Between reports, people had given as much of a crap about the environment as they normally do, which is, essentially, "I wouldn't crap on it if it was on fire," -- which wouldn't help very much at all, now that I think about it. This report, for the first time, concluded with 90 percent certainty that global warming, which is now proven to exist, is the effect of man-made apparatuses. So if you're one of those skeptics who refuse to believe in global warming, then I suggest going to hell. Just kidding -- you're only stupid. Straight from the Oxford English Dictionary, global warming is "the gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants." Sadly, almost every technological process or innovation contributes to pollution. Many great hardships have been eradicated, allowing us to live healthier, longer, and relatively painless lives. Creating new and better things is good for efficiency, sanitation, protection, and durability. But we've gone too far with it. It's an unfortunate trade-off, but I think I'd be OK if my Starburst candy just came in a big, greasy paper bag. The big thing right now is oil. Next, it'll be water. Our deserts are increasing in size, and the Sahara now threatens most of northern Africa and Europe. The irony is that we're creating a fractured and polarized world, fighting over resources which contribute to environmental problems, and then we can't solve any global issues together because of this. We have a global marketplace but we're pretty far from resembling a global community in any sense of the word. But I guess none of that will matter when Greenland melts, raising the world's sea levels by six meters (19 feet) and sending the Gulf Stream current to the bottom of the ocean. The worst implications are that a sudden shift in the Gulf Stream would effectively stop all warm water coming from the equator to Europe, basically causing another ice age. Our new climate would completely alter our food resources, energy needs, etc. In other words: not very effin' good. What would happen here, in the Czech Republic? Well, there'd probably be massive immigration to the Czech Republic from coastal areas, a huge rise in river levels -- they are all connected to the oceans, you know -- and as a bonus, famine and plague. Locusts, man! Oh, and the climate panel also suggests that we have about 10 years before our dastardly effects on the environment become irreversible. Some skeptics strongly disagree with this, though, saying, "Hey, c'mon now! It could be as much as 25 years!" What You Can Do >>> |
