Prague Culture Shock - Conclusion

A 12-part guide to the subtle - and not-so-subtle - nuances that make the Czech capital a more memorable experience

Prague Culture Shock - Conclusion

There are countless cultural differences that strike you immediately upon entering a foreign land.

Some of them are difficult to acculturate to, like remembering not to use your left hand to do almost anything in some countries.

Some of them are charmingly accessible, like giving the formal hello and goodbye to people that you walk by in hallways or in elevators, even though you've no idea who they are, and haven't said a word to them.

You may like or dislike these nuances, but the point is that they exist. I’ve always thought that the joy of travel is found precisely in those weird little differences that you want to write home about.

Living here for the last year has provided me with dozens of stories and anecdotes that even Czech people enjoy hearing. I believe that seeing these differences and analyzing them is as pleasurable as appreciating your own culture's familiar traits.

It's like giving yourself a little extra plant food every day, and the blossom that follows is one that will never die or deteriorate, a flower petrified, forever lurking in the front of one’s brain. A testament to having gone somewhere, once upon a time.
