Prague Culture Shock - Tipping

A 12-part guide to the subtle - and not-so-subtle - nuances that make the Czech capital a more memorable experience

Prague Culture Shock - Tipping

Wait staff don't usually depend on tips in this country, earning a pitiful hourly wage instead of counting on the generosity of strangers.

A normal tip is around 10%, but tip more if you had good service (which, admittedly, can be rare).

The tipping system here is unusual if you're not used to it.

If your bill is 324 CZK and you want to leave 36 CZK as a tip (because the math is easier), you say "360" (třistašedesát) to the waiter and, instead of leaving the tip on the table, include it in the amount you pay. The waiter then gives you the change back.

I like this system, personally. If you're not comfortable saying the numbers in Czech, many Prague servers are familiar with their English equivalents.
