Prague in Depth: Shopping - Outdoor Markets

Get to know the Czech retail environment

As an alternative to shopping malls and department stores, you could try a tržnice (marketplace), of which there are many in and around the center of Prague.

The two best-known outdoor markets are Havelské tržiště in the Old Town and Holešovická tržnice in Holešovice, which was revamped and rebranded River Town Prague in 2008.

Most of the stalls are run by Vietnamese immigrants and other than fruit, vegetables, flowers and handicrafts, a lot of the goods are cheaply made Asian imports.

You can still find good products at good prices here, though, and it's nice be outdoors, away from the mayhem of Prague's Western-style malls.
