Prague in Depth: Shopping - Supermarkets and Hypermarkets

Supermarkets
Albert
This Dutch-owned chain was one of the first in Prague to have a Western feel but many Albert supermarkets now seem dark and cluttered compared to the newcomers on the market. In addition to Albert's supermarkets, Hypernova hypermarkets were rebranded under the Albert name in 2009.

Billa
Since buying Delvita's stores in 2007, German-owned Billa has become one of the Czech Republic's biggest supermarket chains. Its Prague locations are mainly outside the city center.

Kaufland
I love Kaufland! It's a regular enough supermarket, but one that's chock full of marked-down or discontinued items. Great for shopping on a budget.

Tesco
The British retail giant entered the Czech market in 1996 and now has a range of supermarkets, hypermarkets, department stores and Tesco Express convenience stores around the country.

Hypermarkets
Hypermarkets are massive stores that carry almost everything you could ever need or want, all under one enormous roof. In Prague, they're usually well outside the city center, and although it's possible to reach them on public transportation, it's easier by car.

Along with Tesco and Albert (see above), who operate both supermarkets and hypermarkets in Prague, the following companies operate hypermarkets only:

Globus
Since entering the Czech market in 1996, this German hypermarket chain has opened three stores around Prague, in Zličín, Černý Most and Čakovice. Also sells hardware.

Interspar
Owned by the Austrian branch of the Netherlands-based Spar organization, Interspar operates four hypermarkets in the suburbs of Prague and others around the Czech Republic.

Hardware/Garden Centers
In addition to hypermarkets that mainly sell groceries, several chains focus on hardware and gardening. The four biggest -- Bauhaus, bauMax, Hornbach and Obi -- are virtually identical so try the one that's closest to you.

Furniture
The Swedes may have been stopped at Charles Bridge in 1648 but after more than 350 years, they're back. The Swedish furniture giant IKEA has infiltrated practically every home in Prague with its self-assembly furnishings and affordable accessories. Local rivals Sconto and Asko Nábytek also operate huge furniture stores here, but after looking at their offerings, you may wonder why.

Makro
A members-only store catering to business owners, Makro sells food in bulk and also has amazing deals on office furniture, appliances and electronics, plus special seasonal offers on other household and business items. You'll need a živnostenský list (trade license) to join though.
