In April 2007 the Prague Barbarians Rugby Club became members of the Slavia Prague Rugby Club, as a third team run on a purely social basis.

Next year, the Barbarians will celebrate their 15th anniversary, having formed many years ago in the now gone but not forgotten James Joyce pub.

Traditionally, "Baa-Baas" teams have consisted of expatriates, but Czechs and Slovaks have played for the club as well, both for fun and to enjoy the social side of rugby.

In the past, the Barbarians have taken on a wide variety of opponents, including many Czech teams, and for a number of years they entered the Czech second division.

The Barbarians have played touring teams from all over the world, as well as competing in the Warsaw Tens Capitals Cup, and the Prague Sevens on a regular basis.

Plans are in order to celebrate the club's 15th birthday with a grand reunion in Prague, in September 2008, while also hosting the 2008 Capitals Cup.

Over the years, friendships have developed, business deals been made, beers have been consumed, and rugby skills have evolved via the Baa-Baas.

Recently, the club has gone through a lean period regarding membership, but the team is being held together by a few diehards.

A concerted effort to relaunch the club is underway. The first step is to attract new players and social members, the first step of which has been securing a permanent home with the Barbarians' long-term friends at Slavia.

The Barbarians had a number of games during the spring this year, against Bromley from the UK, Monkshead from Ireland, and Rudderia from Italy -- and even managed a victory!

At the end of August, the Barbarians will travel to Vienna to play in the Capitals Cup, an annual tournament that rotates between the capital cities of eastern Europe.

Competing against them will be their expat counterparts from Warsaw, Budapest, the Baltics, Vienna, Prague, and Moscow.

The season starts in early September and there are already a number of matches arranged. If you wish to join the Barbarians, they welcome players from all nationalities, all standards of play, and all levels of experience.

Training restarts on Tuesday, July 31st at 6:15pm at Slavia rugby club.

The Barbarians' current base is The Lions British Bar. You can usually find someone from the club in the bar, especially when live rugby is on.

To contact the Barbarians, either to play, to join as a social member, or for more information about the 2008 reunion, please email info@rugby.cz or info@thelionsbar.cz, or phone Jim Willetts at 775 901 835.
