This is a sponsored article provided by Tennis Club Prague. Between the Charles and Jirásek bridges are three islands -- three green oases in the very center of the city. All offer great opportunities for leisure time. The island nearest to the right bank is called Slovanský ostrov, also known as Žofin. Here you can rent a boat and admire the famous sights surrounding you, such as Hradčany, Charles Bridge, Petřín hill and Vyšehrad. Žofin hall, located on the island, hosts many exclusive concerts, balls, conferences and other significant cultural events. Next to the hall there is a terrace restaurant, a favorite especially among mothers with young children, who can appreciate both the children's corner and the adjacent playground. Slovanský ostrov can be reached via a small bridge very close to the National Theatre (Narodní divadlo). You can park your car right on the island. Parking is charged by the hour. Střelecký ostrov is the largest of the three islands and offers a wide choice of sport and cultural activities, as well as plain relaxation in the shade of the massive trees. You can enjoy a nice dinner or just a drink at Střelecký ostrov Restaurant and Terrace, which offers a beautiful view of the river, Narodní divadlo, and the surrounding greenery. Among the sports available at this island are tennis (there are two clay courts, a tennis school with lessons also in English, and fun tournaments for English speakers), volleyball (one clay court) and archery (weekdays only, in Czech), all of which are offered at a private sports club. This is a haven for those who enjoy working out in quiet, green surroundings. It's recommended that you call ahead to make reservations. There's also a dance club called Pohyb Praha that offers dance courses for children (in Czech). This year, a new attraction is being prepared in the form of a theater on the river. The stage will be on a pontoon, with the auditorium on the island. In the public part of the island, various cultural events take place, such as open-air concerts and open-air film screenings. You can reach Střelecký ostrov from the Most Legii bridge. The third island is called Dětský ostrov (Children's Island), since most of the island is taken up by one of the biggest children's playgrounds in the city. Astroturf-covered five-a-side football and volleyball courts are also available to the public. In the northern part of the island, a terrace restaurant serves barbecued food in addition to its usual menu. Dětský ostrov is easily accessible from the left bank of the river, via a small bridge. I particularly recommend visiting these islands on hot days, when the river and the shade from the trees offer some relief from the city's hot, dusty streets. Discover the beauty of the islands at the heart of one of the world's loveliest cities! More on Tennis Club Prague |
