How the Metro WorksFind your way in Prague's underground

The Prague public transit system, works on what is basically an honor system. You purchase a ticket for 8, 12 or 18 Kč, which you insert into the yellow boxes on trams or at the gates of the metro tunnels, thus validating it for your trip. The 8 Kč ticket is useful only for a short journey of no more than four or five tram stops. You are not permitted to transfer between metro lines or change trams with this fare. The 12 Kč ticket is valid for one hour on weekdays and for 90 minutes after 8 p.m. and on weekends. Within this time limit, you are permitted to transfer at will. The 18 Kč ticket permits you to travel outside of the central Prague zones. The zone system is quite complex, but maps are posted in every metro station. The fine for travelling without a valid ticket is 400 Kč, and the inspector must present his badge and a valid photo ID printed with his badge number. They hate being asked to show their ID, so make sure you have the cash to pay before you piss them off. The surest way to avoid all metro related confusion is to purchase a monthly ticket for 420 Kč. To get your pass book, bring a passport photo, proof of your local address and 25 Kč to Hradčanská, Můstek, NámIěstí MIru or one of the stations further afield which sell the monthly coupons. This content originally appeared in the alternative weekly The Prague Pill. Launched in December 2001 by Micah Jayne and Alexander Zaitchik, the paper ceased publication in June 2003.
