First, a roundup of events in the rest of the world. From the annals of religion, actor Ashton Kutcher was recently photographed wearing a "Jesus Is My Homeboy" baseball cap. Jesus chic, the latest fashion trend in America, is popping up in mainstream chains like Urban Outfitters. A 15-year-old British kid spent seven hours a day for six months in an Internet chat room, first posing as a teenage girl and introducing himself to a boy two years older, and then inventing a cast of characters that included two secret service agents, all in a convoluted plot to try and get himself killed. He was indeed eventually stabbed in an alleyway, severely damaging his kidney, liver and gall bladder, but didn't die. In the courtroom, he cried. The Day After Tomorrow is "utter horseshit, but damned entertaining," says Matt Welch. Matt Welch also says he doesn't like Czech waiters. Starsky & Hutch is funny, says Sam Beckwith. Sam Beckwith is also fascinated by the purple powder that was tossed at Tony Blair in the House of Commons. The funniest thing you'll hear today, if you have a sound card and you bother clicking on the link, is a guy named Tony Pierce singing along to The Smiths' Ask Me. (Go to the link and click on "Play this audio post" or just click here. Really, it's worth it.) And researchers have mapped, county by county, American regional linguistic variations on generic names for sweetened carbonated beverage: soda, pop, or coke. (You'll find loads of handy stats on this site, by the way. For instance, next time somebody calls Canadian national identity into question, point out the following: In Maine, 92.41% of those surveyed call it "soda," whereas just over the border in New Brunswick - that's where you end up if you go to Maine and keep going - 93.47% call it "pop." Go figure.) Al Qaeda killed 22 people in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom sought to reassure the world that oil supplies would not be disrupted. * New voices can be heard in the Prague blogosphere echo chamber. Ladies and gentlemen, a very warm welcome to Kohoco (tagline: "It's good to know you"), a man who calls himself Jeffrey, claims to have impregnated a woman named Alice, and says he has dreams about pickled cheese. In fact, based on a photo posted on his blog, this so-called Jeffrey is the spitting image of Jeff Buehler, former editor of the local contemporary art magazine Umělec. Join Jeffrey as he struggles to make out the features of his unborn child via ultrasound. Next up there's Steal This Idea ("quality hearsay and arduous speculation from the former austro-hungary & thereabouts"), writted by "Theo," who in all likelihood is the editor of Prague Daily Monitor and a former managing editor of the The Prague Post. Then there's Seeba, a blog written by an American named Jason who seems to live in Prague. Hailing from San Jose, California, Jason is the former General Manager of Valley Christian high school's radio station, KVCH 104.1 FM. (Sadly, the site hasn't been updated since the United States' surprise win over the Czech Republic in the World Ice Hockey Championships at the start of May.) Meanwhile, Adamm from Brno likes tequila and Kofola (although probably not together), but dislikes American football, red beets and raw tomatoes. Former Prague-based blogger Geoff Goodfellow has relocated back to the U.S., where apparently it's quite common to see pictures like this. With so much coming and going, it's proven damn difficult to keep track of Prague bloggers. Wild Soda (some call it "Wild Pop") appears to have relocated to New York City, while the international man of leisure named Bloopy, of the misnamed Shitty Writing For the Truly Bored, is now spinning yarns from Berkeley, California. (It goes to show that a blogger in Prague does not a "Prague blog" make, but it's good to keep track of these globetrotters regardless.) * Also worth noting: The well-trafficked ain't-that-cool website Boing Boing linked to Arellanes's posting of old-school commie TV ads. If you haven't watched these babies, you're missing out. * They're dying out. Radio Prague reports that Czechs have one of the lowest fertility rates in Europe. Only Ukraine's is lower. At the current rate of reproduction (about 1.17 children per couple), in 300 years there will only be 60,000 Czechs left. Just to put things in perspective, that's about how many Sorbs are left in eastern Germany.
