NATO Prague Summit

Going by numbers alone, NATO's Prague Summit is one of the biggest events the city has ever seen. Three thousand delegates representing 46 countries, including dozens of government heads, will attract the attention of more than 2,500 accredited journalists; Up to 12,000 anti-NATO protestors, meanwhile, will attract the attention of 12,000 police - half of them brought into the city especially for the occasion. Avoiding the violent protests that accompanied 2000's World Bank/International Monetary Fund meeting in Prague is a priority for the organizers, but terrorism is a bigger concern. The guest-list reads like a Who's Who of Western politics: President George W. Bush, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld will be the official representatives of the United States. Other big names attending the Prague Summit include British Prime Minister Tony Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, French President Jacques Chirac, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi - virtually a terrorist's wish-list. Some 2,400 Czech soldiers and up to 250 U.S. troops will attempt to ensure security, and the Czech government has passed a law allowing United States fighter jets to patrol Czech airspace for the duration of the summit. Security will be at its most intense around the Prague Congress Center at Vysehrad, but streets will also be closed to the general public around Prague Castle and Obecni dum (Municipal House), where summit-related social events will be taking place. So, besides causing inconvenience to everyday Praguers, what else will the summit achieve? |
