Finding opportunity, prosperity and success in the Czech Republic

Enter naive American
This is a story about a starry-eyed American moving to Prague during the beginning of the booming economic period between 2004-2008.

Even by Czech standards, he was reasonably poor when he first moved to Prague. In fact, he still had some minor credit debt to pay off when he arrived, so he was technically in the red. He earned about 18,000 CZK in total during a 3-month period directly after moving here. Granted, he had saved wisely and was able to tap into those resources, which had been expected anyway. Eventually, he began to earn regular income teaching at an English school, a Czech university and with private students. After 1.5 years of this, he left to work directly in marketing, starting at the bottom of the food chain.

This opened up other opportunities for him, and by working hard, finding a niche area in which to specialize and by making sure that he always delivered better than the others around him, he found a nice path opening up over the next several years. His hard work has been paying off for him. Kind of sounds like the American Dream, huh?

Czech meteorologists are forecasting the coldest weather of the winter so far this weekend (February 11-12, 2012), with nighttime temperatures dropping to around -35 degrees Celsius (-31 degrees Fahrenheit) in some parts of the country.

There’s even a possibility that temperatures will drop below -42.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the Czech lands (in the village of Litvínovice, southern Bohemia, in 1929).

According to Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (Český hydrometeorologický ústav) spokesman Petr Dvořák, quoted on the Novinky.cz website, temperatures in the Prague area could drop as low as -25 degrees Celsius early on Sunday morning.

Temperatures are expected to rise significantly on Monday but still remain below freezing.

The following six music groups are my top bands of 2011, and for good reason. Each band is archetypal of my most common mental states, states that rise to the surface at various times throughout the week/month/year. If you’ve ever been interested in broadly expanding your musical horizons into genres that may be completely new to you, take comfort in knowing that I had to sift through a lot of crap to get down to just six :-)

1979: Astronaut. Jet Pilot. Firefighter.

1996: Doctor. Lawyer. Financial Consultant.

2012: Vampire. Superhero. Drunken Billionaire.

People today want to be, and do, impossible things — what has led to this? Is it too boring to simply learn from life and school, work hard and live your life the best you can? How about long-forgotten pagan gods? I want to be Pan when I grow up. Something supernatural, or at least highly improbable, should be happening to me also!

In the last 10 years, vampires have become far more humanized in popular fiction. Today’s vampires attend high school, abstaining from sex and bloodlust, work in bars in Louisiana, organize political movements and fret over relationships; it’s not hard to see why people today would rather prefer to be a vampire or superhero than a tax attorney or architect. They’re already just like us!

Unsurprisingly, people even in their early 40s have already begun to imitate the three most attractive qualities of Vampire Life:
