Vodka Bar Propaganda
Vodka Bar Propaganda features live music onstage and live broadcast of sporting events
Down in the Old Town area of Prague lies Vodka Bar Propaganda, one of the many bars that inhabit Prague but one whose name perfectly describes everything about it. Every week they feature live music onstage and live broadcast of sporting events. Two things that stand out about the place are its extensive range of homemade flavored vodkas and the propaganda memorabilia that line some of the walls. Recently though it’s undergone a few changes to focus less on the old communist propaganda style, but the vodka still remains.
“We’ve changed the decor so there’s not as much propaganda stuff,” explains the general manager. “It’s more about revolution in general now which can mean anything you want, from Ho Chi Minh to the Sex Pistols.”
There is still one room with old communist memorabilia lining in it but for the most part they had a lot of new artwork painted directly on the walls by three different artists which are mostly murals of iconic revolutionary figures from both the social and musical spheres. The bar itself was opened by American entrepreneur Glenn Spicker in 2010, who also owns the Museum of Communism, Buirrito Loco, Bohemia Bagel and Jazz bar U Malého Glenna in Malostrana.
“He is really interested in the history of the Czech Republic and the region as a whole so he collects a lot of old artifacts. He opened the Museum of Communism in Prague and had a bunch of stuff left over so decided to open the bar with an old communist decor.”
They aim to attract both Czech residents and tourists with a fifty-fifty client base made up of the two. A lot of young Czech people and expatriates often visit the bar, presumably for the vodka, live music and other events, as well as plenty of residents seeing as they’re so easy to find being right in the centre of Prague. Vodka Bar Propaganda has two big projection screens showing sport in HD, from NFL on Sundays to European and international football, and with vodka flavours ranging from Banana to Wasabi and a full drink menu of cocktails and 6 Czech beers on tap, there’s something for everyone.
As regards live music, “We have it every weekend, a combination of local and touring bands. We try to focus on bands with a unique sound such as The Duchess & The Kittens, who are Prague’s only cabaret-rhumba-tango-swing-punk collaboration, or Mr. Loco who play something they refer to as Balkan-Latin assault grooves.”
Next weekend, Saturday 26th October, they have their Halloween Bash where The Duchess & The Kittens will be performing, with costume contests and prizes for the scariest, sexiest and most realistic outfits as well as some free food. Friday 1st November is a Surf Music Night with the Rumblemen and Jehosaphath Blow before Saturday 2nd features UK gypsy-brass-ska group Johnny Kowalski & The Sexy Weirdos.
On Tuesday 19th November it’s the big one, as Prague.tv holds their after work networking party there. Featuring a free welcome drink of Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger ale, lime and cucumber), homemade flavoured vodka sampling, free food by Burrito Loco and music from DJ Don’t Panic and Tommy Trumpet, who do their own mash-ups of vinyl grooves and live music; it should be a top event.
