Painting the town green!

A guide to Prague’s 2014 St Paddy’s Day Celebrations

It’s March, which means the greenest and most drunken of holidays is almost upon us- St Patrick’s Day! Once more, on the 17th March, the streets will be flooded with a sea of green, white and orange in celebration of Ireland’s patron saint, St Patrick.

You may or may not be surprised to learn that St Paddy’s day is actually quite popular in the Czech Republic. Obviously, a shared love of beer and music mean that the Irish celebration is a fairly popular one, most probably due in part to the large amounts of expats who flock here from around the world. So, what of St Patrick’s day 2014? Here’s a comprehensive guide to the events that will be going on around Prague.

JJ Murphy’s

This traditional Irish-run bar can be found at Trziste 4, Prague 1, not too far from Charles Bridge and open every day from 10am until 12am, and until 1am Thursday to Saturday are bringing Prague more live music acts than ever before, as well as green beer and lots of prizes for those who are wearing green. From Friday until Monday, there are various music acts from around the UK and Ireland, as well as live sporting events like the Cheltenham festival and the six nations rugby final. So why not get down there and join in the craic?

James Joyce Irish Pub

Situated at U obecního dvora 794/4, Prague 1, not far from the Old Town square, The James Joyce will be hosting a plethora of live music over the weekend and on St Paddy’s day, as well as offering green beer and an Irish Specials menu. They’ll also be giving away plenty of presents from Magners, O'Haras, Jameson and more- and not forgetting the Guinness hats! Open every day from 11am until 12:30am, and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, The James Joyce is definitely one great stop on any St Patrick’s pub crawl.

Caffrey’s Irish Bar

Caffrey’s bar, located at Staroměstské náměstí 10, Prague 1, just off the old town square, is another traditional Irish pub offering a ton of live music over the weekend and on Monday. With bands starting at 2pm on Monday, and playing until they close at 2am, and with a wide variety of drinks including classic Irish whiskey, this is one more pub to be putting on your list of places to check out for St Patrick’s.

La Loca Music Bar & Lounge

Another great place to spend St Paddy’s night this year is La Loca, found at Odborů 278/4, Prague 2. Featuring music by Shannon Irish Music, they play authentic Irish tunes that wouldn’t be out of place on the emerald isle itself. Of course, there’s plenty of green beer to go around, and with free entry, why not check it out for the perfect end to a long day’s drinking?

With all these different events going on around Prague over the weekend, it looks like to be a great time to sort out a pub crawl, particularly within Prague 1 and around the old town square. So don your greenest outfit, get your shamrocks and go and enjoy the craic that is St Patrick’s Day 2014! Cheers!
