The Cure to play O2 Arena Prague
British band has been playing a massive show with most of their hits plus new songs
After several years of relative silence, The Cure announced The Cure Tour 2016, which will come to Prague's O2 Arena on Oct. 22. Its their most extensive in Europe in eight years, but it does not coincide with a new album.
There have long been rumors of a new album title 4:14 Scream, which is supposed to be the second part of 4:13 Dream, their last album released in 2008. The Cure's frontman Robert Smith gave several interviews about the album in 2014, but so far the album has been like an ideal child — both unseen and unheard.
The band kicks off the European leg of its tour Oct. 7 in Finland and wraps it up Dec. 3 in the UK. They have already been through North America and Oceania.
“[The Cure will] explore 37 years of Cure songs, mixing hits, rarities, favorites and as-yet unreleased tracks in a brand new stage production that promises to be one of the 'must see' shows of the year!” the band said in a news release when the tour was announced.
The setlists have changed a bit as the tour progressed. The most recent shows have had about 34 songs, delivering on the promise to explore the entire catalog.
The band's golden age was the 1980s, and that era takes up a lot of the show. The 1989 album Disintegration provides about 20 percent of the shows songs, including “Plainsong,” which sometimes opens the show, and “Fascination Street.” The Cure's previous two albums, 1985's The Head on the Door and 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me combined provide another 20 percent.
The promised new material is two unreleased songs called “Step Into the Light” and “It Can Never Be the Same.”
Many of the big hits come in the encores, with some shows having the band return four times after the main set, so don't run to the exits after the first encore. “A Forest,” “The Lovecats,” “Let's Go to Bed” and “Boys Don't Cry” should turn up in the encores if they haven't already.
The current tour lineup will include Robert Smith on voice/guitar, Simon Gallup on bass, Jason Cooper on drums, Roger O'Donnell on keys and Reeves Gabrels on guitar.
Smith is the band's only constant member. Gabrels joined in 2012 and is known for his work with David Bowie and also Bowie's band Tin Machine. Simon Gallup has been with the band on and off since 1979. Jason Cooper joined in 1995, having previously been with My Life Story. Roger O'Donnell has been with the band on and off since 1987, and has also been associated with Thompson Twins, Berlin, and The Psychedelic Furs.
The group has released 13 studios album in their career and has sold around 30 million albums worldwide.
They are also known for their video clips such as “Lullaby” directed by Tim Pope, which won the Brit Award in 1990. They won Best British Group the next year. They also won an MTV Icon Award in 2004 and an Shockwaves NME Award for Godlike Genius in 2009.
They became famous worldwide with their seventh album — Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, — released in 1987. which was their first entry in the US Top 40 at number 35.
Director Tim Burton took Robert Smith as a reference to create the character of Edward Scissorhands.
