Depeche Mode announces new tour
The British band will be back in Prague in May 2017
British electronic band Depeche Mode announced the first leg of its Global Spirit tour, and they will be coming to Prague's Eden Arena on May 24, 2017. Tickets go on sale to Live Nation club members Oct. 19 and to the general public on Oct. 21.
The show will include new material from the band's forthcoming studio album Spirit, due to be released in spring 2017. Spirit is being produced by James Ford, who has previously worked with Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons, Foals, and Mumford & Sons, among may others.
Spirit will be Depeche Mode's 14th studio album, following Delta Machine in 2013. “The Summer 2017 European stadium tour will see the band play to more than 1.5 million fans in 32 cities in 21 countries across Europe. The tour starts at Stockholm's Friends Arena on May 5, 2017, and ends July 23 with a final stadium show in Cluj-Napoca, Romania,” the band said in a press release.
Only a few specific details about the album or tour are available yet. “On the Global Spirit Tour the band will continue their charity partnership with Swiss watch maker Hublot, raising money and awareness for Charity: Water toward their mission of providing safe drinking water to everyone in the world,” the band announced. After the European leg, the band will take the show to North and South America, but dates have not yet been announced.
The current lineup has been consistent for over a decade now, with Dave Gahan on lead vocals; Martin Gore on keyboards, backing and lead vocals and guitars; and Andy Fletcher on keyboards, backing vocals and bass guitar. Additional musicians join them on tour. Gore has been the chief songwriter since 1981, with Gahan also writing some songs.
The upcoming concert will be the band's 10th appearance in Prague. They were in Prague twice with the Delta Machine tour, in 2013 at Eden and in 2014 at O2 Arena. The first time they played Prague was in 1988 with the Music for the Masses Tour, when they were at what was then called Sportovni hala at Výstaviště.
Depeche Mode has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the most popular electronic bands.
Their first international success came in 1984 with the single “People Are People.” Their fame solidified later with the 1990 album Violator, which reached number two in UK charts and number seven in the US. That was surpassed with their 1993 album Songs of Faith and Devotion, which reached number one in the charts in both the UK and the US. The band over its career has released 53 singles and 70 music videos as well.
While there is no way to tell what the upcoming tour will present, the band's top three songs that they play live are “Never Let Me Down Again,” “Enjoy the Silence” and “Personal Jesus.”
