The Farm Urban Kitchen and Coffee - Summer Hotspots 2014

A new café with a different outlook opens in Letná

A chic, friendly urban kitchen and café with an accommodating and eco-friendly outlook that recently opened in the Letná quarter of Prague 7 is celebrating a successful first month in business.

The Farm Urban Kitchen and Coffee serves an array of food and drinks from Doubleshot Coffee to pancakes, burgers and all day brunch. The café is owned by the lovely Lucie Vanásková who after moving to Canada in her teens returned home to Prague and wanted to provide a different kind of café experience in the city.

“I think a lot of places here in Prague lack customer service – they don’t put the customer first,” explains Lucie. “At The Farm we want to provide something better than that – something fresh and friendly where the customer is always right!”

And this approach seems to be working if the café’s popularity and rave reviews on its Facebook page are anything to go by.

“We’ve only been in business for a month, but already we’re really busy every day and on weekends you can’t get a table without a reservation!” enthuses Lucie. “Our customers have been very encouraging and we’re starting to see a lot of regular faces from the local neighbourhood.”

The Farm’s customer focus isn’t the only aspect that sets it apart from its competitors. Interestingly, the café doesn’t actually have a set, specific menu. Each morning Lucie travels to the BioVavřinec farmer’s market in the neighbouring town of Benešov to purchase fresh produce. This gives The Farm a degree of flexibility not usually found, meaning guests can request whatever dishes they like, if the café has the available ingredients.

“Recently, we had a lady come in who had a gluten-free diet and was lactose intolerant too. We told her that if she didn’t mind waiting, we’d be happy to make her breakfast according to her dietary requirements,” says Lucie. “She was delighted as she usually found it really difficult to eat out with her friends due to her diet. But at The Farm, we try to never say no to any customer, no matter what their request.”

This accommodating nature doesn’t just extend to us human folk however. The Farm is also dog-friendly too – part of the reason why Lucie chose the dog-oriented Letná area as the café’s location.

“Last week we had a huge Great Dane and two poodles in at the same time!” says Lucie. “And we always make sure they get a piece of bacon – it’s a place where owners and their dogs can enjoy great food in the same location. Though we are planning to introduce meals that can be enjoyed by all our customers that are healthy for dogs too like rice, beef and carrot based dishes.”

The Farm not only operates a dog-friendly policy, it is eco-friendly too. All milk purchased from BioVavřinec comes in glass bottles that are returnable and reusable and the café recycles all its waste. The Farm even recycles its used coffee grounds by adding it to compost – a method that enriches soil that the café intends to sell as an extra income. All furniture in the café has been reclaimed in some way – its lamps are 1930s designs, a milk delivery bike used during World War II hangs from a wall and it features a charming swing chair made from recycled palettes from Japan. Lucie, along with some help from her friends, even made the café tables herself.

As for the future, Lucie has many plans in the pipeline. Taking advantage of The Farm’s location in between two parks – Letenské Sady and Stromovka – the café will soon offer customers bikes for hire along with picnic food, blankets and cutlery so they can enjoy a hassle-free park picnic. Having already held a successful kids cooking class Lucie intends to host more vents of this nature and The Farm’s basement space will soon be transformed into a bar that brews its own beers and ciders – a place that Lucie envisions will a cosy, mountain cottage feel and will feature live music every Friday and Saturday night.

So if you find yourself in Letná - even if you are walking your dog - stop by The Farm where the warm, friendly staff will make you a revitalising cup of coffee and a delicious pancake, and even sneak your dog a crispy piece of bacon.
