The first authentic fish and chip shop in the Czech Republic

Fish & Chips Dlouha St. 21 is proud to call itself the first authentic fish and chip shop in the Czech Republic, but as well as the traditional fare of cod, chips, and mushy peas, it offers a range of bistro-style dishes that cater for most tastes. Open for just over two years the restaurant has been careful to evolve its menu to satisfy the palate of both Czechs and expats, as well as a constant stream of tourists, but manager Radek Šlapák is keen to emphasise that his priority is to provide diners with a consistently high standard of quality and service.

“We now have a good core of Czech people coming here, and of course because of the location we have a lot of tourists too, but my goal is to build and maintain a consistent base of regulars, including expats. We want people to come back and know that they will always get the same personal service and the same consistently good food. I want people to come here and be known by the staff and have a relationship with us.”

The restaurant is split between the open kitchen, area similar to a British fish and chip shop, and the main dining area decked out with familiar icons such as The Beatles, Mr Bean (!), and a classic red phone box. The kitchen boasts a Hopkins fryer imported from the UK to make the place (and the fish) as authentic as possible and large doors open onto the outside seating area giving the restaurant a nice bistro feel.

Though fish and chips were obviously the starting point for the menu it has been through several transitions since the restaurant opened.

“First of all the idea was to be like a British fish and chip shop but now we have developed the menu to be a real bistro. We have the fish and chips but you can choose different options. Gastronomy in Prague has changed a lot over the last five years and Czech people are into the different fashions with food, a few years back everyone was into sushi for example. There’s definitely a group of people that are into the very fancy restaurants but we want to cater more for regular diners and our menu now reflects that.”

Though they’ve earned a reputation for very good burgers it seemed only fair to go for the fish so I opted for fish chowder followed by cod, chips, and mushy peas. The chowder was excellent, a very nice texture and just the right seasoning, and a drizzle of chilli oil gave it a nice kick. With the main course I ordered extra sides of tartar sauce and garlic mayonnaise and it was all presented nicely on faux newspaper for an additional touch of quirkiness. The cod was a good size portion and very meaty, coated in a nice beer batter (I’d previously thought that you shouldn’t tamper with a classic but this was genuinely very good!). The chips were okay, they were nice and crisp, but a little too close to oven chips for me. The mushy peas weren’t traditional either but were tasty nonetheless. I went for a bottle of cider as it was a hot day but there’s a very impressive drinks menu including a great selection of imported ales. Overall the food, the service, and the restaurant were all very good, and with the plan to open until 05:00 on Fridays and Saturdays it could be hard to resist popping back for one of those burgers after a few too many.
