Specializing in seafood and pasta, Riccardo Lucque's Vinohrady restaurant offers an authentic taste of Italy

One of Prague's best Italian restaurants is in Vinohrady, where chef owner Riccardo Lucque prepares the cuisine of his home region, Marche, in a refurbished 19th-century salon.

Rather than standard rectangular tables, its two relatively spacious rooms - one for smokers and one for non-smokers - feature round tables, seating four people, creating a more comfortable environment.

The idea is Riccardo's. "I like people to share their food," he explains. "I recommend that customers order a bigger fish, and add various types of appetizers and side dishes, so that everyone can taste whatever they want. That's the real Italy."

You can find a lot Italian restaurants in Prague these days, so maybe your question is: Is it possible to come up with something new?

"I try to offer specialties that you won't find elsewhere," says Lucque. "I import everything that I can myself - prosciutto, cheeses, wines."

Lucque has studied gastronomy since he was 16, and worked as head chef in numerous restaurants, not only in his native Italy, but also in New York, and in London, in a restaurant with a Michelin star.

The Aromi menu is dominated by seafood and pasta, along with a daily offering of fresh fish specials. There's also, of course, a wide variety of wines, particularly those from Italy.

The best thing about the meals is that they're simply prepared, but with the freshest and highest quality ingredients.

I spent a lovely evening there with my friends, and the wait staff took very good care of us. I like it when the restaurant personnel know their job well and, most importantly, know what they're offering their guests. They're able to make recommendations and also give you a simple description of how your meal is prepared.

I was just a little bit disappointed with my tuna, which I'd wanted rare but which was served well done. Fortunately, though, the fish was fresh, so I enjoyed it anyway.

My friend's beef steak with grilled polenta and foie gras was delicious and served medium, just as he wanted it.

We also ordered pasta dishes, which I can only recommend!

And people were also raving about the sea bass baked in sea salt, which you must try.

The Grand Marnier chocolate fondant is absolutely fabulous too - an explosion of chocolate in your mouth.

In short, Aromi is a restaurant that serves excellent food at very reasonable prices.
