U Pinkasů has a long history of popularity, as do many places that serve you basically unlimited amounts of alcohol.

It was established in 1843 and is known by locals today as one of the three best places in Prague to drink Pilsner Urquell.

I sampled two dishes, the first being classic guláš (goulash) with fluffy bread dumplings. The meat was braised and tender, in a rich brown sauce with shredded horseradish. Only the extraneous and unfortunately named "goat horn" pepper was left on my plate.

Next was slaneček, a type of pickled herring. This was salty and mild, served with onions and fresh lemon. It was so red it looked like it had been slaughtered only 30 seconds before.

Downstairs, U Pinkasů is open until 2am, which can approach quickly as long as the smoke is tolerable. Mobile phones don't work in the lower levels, which can be frustrating, especially for a slightly tipsy reviewer.

Their menu is filled with meat dishes and higher quality traditional items, along with a surprisingly well-translated English blurb (no "friend chicken" on this menu) that explains in tiny print their history and their tolerant attitude toward customers of all backgrounds.

Conclusion: I plan on going back to U Pinkasu for many reasons, but above all, their friendly attitude and exceptionally good beer really closes the deal.

The price for pivo is appropriate, even good, for its location, which is literally a five-minute walk from Můstek metro station. The food is great, for what it is: lots of meat.

If you don't like this style and long for a 300 CZK cheeseburger that reminds you of home, don't come here. They wouldn't want you anyway.

PTV SCORECARD

Beer Temperature: 10 out of 10

Precise and tasty, served in ice-cold mugs (always a plus).

Atmosphere: 8/10

Smoky, like what I suppose could be the atmosphere of Venus's downstairs dungeon, but this four-storey building offers non-smoking dining rooms upstairs.

Food: 8.5/10

Traditional, yummy 19th-century Czech recipes - not vegetarian friendly - and fast!

Culture & Friendliness: 9/10

Pleasant, friendly staff, used to serving tourists that expect slightly higher quality service. Our waiter was also conveniently fire-resistant.

Service: 9/10

Quick and efficient. There was no need to request a beer - it was brought to you just as you were asking yourself if you wanted another. Allow yourself to have higher expectations here.

Bathrooms: 7.5/10

It's odd when the bathroom is many times fresher than the choking dungeon you're sitting in. Pretty clean, a bit waterlogged from frequent use, plenty of paper towels, but no blind man selling aftershave and condoms.

Garden: 8/10

No garden, but ample front patio seating for at least 120 people.

Cleanliness of Taps: 9.5 out of 10

Polished and well-kept.

OVERALL: 8.7 out of 10
