15th Edition of Art Prague Contemporary Art Fair
Art Prague 2016 - 15th till 20th March 2016
Art Prague returns again with the 2016 edition including 36 galleries touting their wares in Kafkův dům on the Old Town Square. For those of you that haven’t attended previous events this is a commercial shindig where visitors have the chance to see a wide selection of paintings, sculptures, and other artistic titbits, all of which are for sale.
This is the fourth year that Art Prague has been held in this venue (it was previously in the Mánes Gallery) and unless you go at an off-peak time it can get a little claustrophobic. The building clearly wasn’t intended as a place to display art and it’s evident as soon as you arrive, but the close proximity of the displays and the general hubbub of dealers and punters at least gives it a friendly, less pretentious, feel.
If you are intending to buy something make sure you give yourself plenty of time to see all of the stands. Remember too that you don’t have to buy something during the event; if you see an artist you like then arrange with the dealer to visit their gallery and see as full a selection as they have. In many cases they will be happy to arrange a meeting with the artist too.
Saturday is always going to be the busiest time to visit so you might not want to brave that but the venue is open until 19:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, 21:00 on Thursday, and 18:00 on Sunday so choose wisely and you’ll miss the crush. Don’t forget that the main purpose of a show like this is to introduce visitors to as many galleries as possible. There are a number of independent galleries tucked away in Prague so have a chat with the representatives, add your name to some mailing lists, and use the event as a way of broadening your cultural life in Prague.
