International Museum Day 2016
Celebrate museums and their cultural importance on May 18th
Since May 18th 1977, International Museum Day has been celebrated worldwide. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness on the importance of museums in the development of society. Almost 35,000 museums participate in the event in 145 countries in 2015.
This year the theme will be museums and cultural landscapes. The same theme will resonate at the General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) that will take place in Milan, Italy in July. Cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and the development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples will all be promoted at this year's event.
On Wednesday, May 18th, The City of Prague Museum will celebrate its 130th anniversary. On this day there will be free entry into the main museum building at Na Poříčí 52/1554 but also at the Podskalí Custom House at Výtoň and Ctěnice Chateau.
The main building at Florenc will have guided tours and programs for visitors including the photo exhibition of Zdenko Feyfar. In front of the museum there will jugglers and stilt-walkers. There will also be a theater performance organized for the children. Other highlights include a DDM Karlínské Spektrum workshop and a quiz with great prizes.
There will be free admission and special programs at the Sternberg Palace, Schwarzenberg Palace, the Monastery of St. Agnes Czech, the Trade Fair Palace, Kinský Palace and Wallenstein Riding School. Visitors can discover the collections of Old Masters, modern and contemporary art, the art of Asia and the ancient Mediterranean and many more.
Other museums with special programs include Náprstkovo Museum, Czech Museum of Music, Lapidary, the Museum of Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana Museum, National Monument on Vítkov and the Ethnographic Museum – Musaion.
