Sparta Prague celebrate European success in Rome!
Next stop: Villarreal
Czech football fans were celebrating a famous victory last night as Sparta Prague made history by routing Lazio 3-0 in the UEFA Europa League to reach the quarter-final stage. A flurry of first half goals stunned the Italians and saw Sparta advance to the next round 4-1 on aggregate.
The Prague club maybe playing second fiddle to Viktoria Plzen in the Czech league at the moment but their record in Europe has been imperious this season as Sparta remain unbeaten with a positive goal difference of 14.
Sparta haven’t reached this stage of the UEFA competition since 1984. Meanwhile, victory last night in Rome was a landmark occasion as it’s the first time Sparta have won on Italian soil and it was nicely summed up by the reaction of former player Patrik Berger on twitter and the scenes of celebration in Rome.
Just checking the scores and wtf is going on with @ACSparta_CZ in Rome ...absolutely love it !!!— PB (@patrikberger73) March 17, 2016
And the Spartans were rewarded with a tie against Spanish side Villarreal in the next round – although Czech fans would have been hoping to see the likes of Borussia Dortmund or Liverpool visit the Czech capital - but the tie with Villarreal offers Sparta a chance of continuing their European adventure.
The first leg in Spain is due to take place on Thursday 7th April with the second leg taking place in Prague on Thursday 14th April 2016 in what promises to be the hottest ticket in town.
