American football champs meet in Czech Bowl
Prague Black Panthers will play the undefeated Prague Lions in Žižkov
The two top American football teams will meet to battle it out in the Czech Bowl. The game will be at FK Viktoria Stadium in Žižkov on July 23 at 7 pm, but the field in front of the stadium will open at 2 pm for fans and kids to test their skills in a Fan Zone, and for tailgating.
Kickoff is at 7:30 pm, following a half hour of cheerleaders and an opening ceremony.
American football has long struggled to gain popularity in Europe, so many will be surprised to hear that this is the 23rd Czech Bowl. Like its American counterparts, it is characterized with Roman numerals — Czech Bowl XXIII.
The Czech Bowl will see the Prague Black Panthers playing against the Prague Lions. While the Black Panthers have long dominated the sport locally, the Lions have had an undefeated season and seem confident that they have their best chance at willing in a decade. They last won in 2006.
The Black Panthers dominated since then, except for 2011 and '12 when the Prague Black Hawks won.
This year, though, the Black Panthers have not had their best season. The team was hit with some injuries and suffered several losses, including two to the Lions.
The injured players are all back on the roster, and the Black Panthers will be able to field a strong team for the Czech Bowl, so it promises to be an exciting game.
The game is moving to a new stadium this year, after having previously been Slavia Stadium. Last year it drew 4,500 viewers. The game will also be televised on ČT Sport and streamed on the ČT Sport website.
