The venerated rock trio Dinosaur Jr. comes to Lucerna on Monday, February 18 th, as part of the band’s UK/EU tour.
Formed in 1983 in Amherst, Massachusetts, Dinosaur Jr. is largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, the band injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise.
Dinosaur (before adding Jr.) signed to SST Records in ‘87 on the recommendation of Sonic Youth, and with them released what is often considered their best album, You’re Living All Over Me. Dinosaur's SST records laid the foundation for alternative rock's commercial breakthrough in the early '90s, and while the band's profile was raised substantially in the wake of Nirvana's success, Dinosaur never really became much bigger than highly respected cult figures.
The band ground to a complete halt in 1997. After 13 tumultuous years together, during which two-thirds of the original lineup had quit or gotten kicked out, frontman J Mascis retired the Dino-moniker and began recording and touring under his own name.
After a long hiatus, the trio reunited in 2005. Their most recent album, released in 2012, I Bet on Sky, was widely praised for its explosive energy and characteristically bold integration of feedback and distortion.
