Emika returns to her roots at MeetFactory on Friday, February 24, bringing with her the musical styles and influences of both Bristol and Berlin.

Although she was born in the UK, growing up in Bristol, the electronica artist (real name Ema Jolly) is of Czech heritage.

Emika, who currently resides in Berlin, has been playing all over Europe this past year, but is only now playing her parents' homeland for the first time.

The dark dubstep influences dominant in Bristol and the spooky, minimal sounds often found in clubs throughout Berlin are both evident in her music.

In fact, some of her music incorporates field recordings taken from clubs such as the infamous Berghain, notorious for nonstop trance and minimal techno nights that last way past sunrise.

Emika grew up studying piano and composition, receiving a degree in Music Technology, and also worked as a sound designer for Native Instruments in Berlin.

She has been producing music since 2009, appearing on tracks with artists such as Pinch, Kryptic Minds, Paul Frick, and MyMy.

She released her first single, Drop the Other, in January 2010, off of Ninja Tune. Her debut, self-titled album was released on the same label in October of last year (2011).

She produces and sings on all of her tracks, which mix trip-hop, dubstep, classical, minimal house, and experimental electronic music.

Her voice sounds similar to American experimental artist Zola Jesus, but with more of a dance emphasis to the production.

Many of Emika's songs have an eerie quality, leaving the listener with chills, while her femme fatale stage presence and the melancholy mood of her music is enough to put an audience in a trance. Listen and see for yourself.

Slovak dubstep artist Dalibor Kocián's Stroon project will be opening for Emika at MeetFactory.
