Like Mardi Gras in New Orleans or Carnival in Rio, this traditional Czech festival is held in the days leading up to Lent. The word Masopust means "to give up meat" and traditionally it's a last chance to feast (predominantly on pork) before the fasting and penitence begin. Like many Christian festivals, though, Masopust incorporates elements of much older traditions involving fertility rites and celebrating the coming of spring. Those elements live on in the masks and costumes traditionally worn by revelers, representing various mythical characters and creatures. Over the weekend, there are events at Palác Akropolis, the Kino Aero cinema, and U vystřelenýho oka. On Saturday the 21st, Akropolis hosts a fancy-dress ball for children in the afternoon (2pm; free entry) and a masquerade ball for grown-ups in the evening (7pm; free entry in costume/100 CZK without), featuring live music by Beatles and Rolling Stones revival bands. On Sunday the 22nd, U vystřelenýho oka stages a "Masopust feast" (12 noon) with live music from the Žižkovanka brass band, then Kino Aero holds its own children's event, including film screenings (2pm). Tuesday the 24th's parade remains Žižkovský masopust's main event, however, bringing together a diverse array of costumed (and non-costumed) revelers. As usual, this year's parade begins on Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad square, at 4pm. After stops at the foot of the TV tower (Mahlerovy sady), at the Prague 3 town hall at Havlíčkovo náměstí, and on Žižkovo náměstí, it returns to Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad, where festivities reach their climax at around 8:30pm.
