Belgian town bans 'Saddam shark'

The "Saddam Shark" was named after Damien Hirst's artwork

A town in Belgium has banned an artwork of Saddam Hussein for fear that it will put off tourists and offend Muslims.
The piece, called Saddam Hussein Shark, shows the handcuffed ex-Iraqi ruler suspended in liquid and wearing nothing more than underpants.

The mayor of Middlekerke, Michel Landuyt, said the work could "shock people", including Muslims.

He said he decided to ban Czech artist David Cerny's sculpture before the row over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Saddam piece, which is named "shark" after British artist Damien Hirst's famous shark suspended in formaldehyde, was first shown in Prague last September.

'Too shocking'

But Mr Landuyt felt its exhibition would be too much for the small Belgian seaside town. "In my view, it was too shocking," he said.

"They wanted to put this piece in a location where many children come, so that couldn't be allowed," he told the BBC.

He added that the 'Saddam Shark' is now going to be displayed in a museum in the Belgian city of Ostend.

"When you go to a museum and are prepared to see those things and there is an explanation, perhaps there is no problem. But when you come somewhere where you don't expect that, it can be a problem," he said.

An anti-conformist artist, Mr Cerny's previous works have included a man hanging from a pole using just one hand, a series of "kits" including one of Jesus, and a pair of naked bronze figures urinating into a pond.

Damien Hirst's well-known shark installation, entitled The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, was commissioned by art collector Charles Saatchi in 1991 for £50,000.

It propelled Hirst to fame when it first went on display in 1992.

watch all the sissy neo-euro liberals run and hide. oooh you wouldn't want to offend anyone, oh no. art has never pushed the envelope before. my policy is generally if the art is actually there, and on display it should never be removed, curators have the ability to chose work for an exhibition, now if the piece is simply removed by some spineless government official, or because it "offended" somebody, then the piece should stay, as it would generate discussion about a potentially sensitive issue. I remember when I was in school, and a korean-american woman made a video piece about how Korean women are treated in South Korea. During the showing many Korean students stood up, made noises, and tried to stop the film from being shown, now instead of my school saying that the film had offended the large Korean population there, they instead scheduled more showings of the film, and organised discussion time, as well as a question and answer period after the screening. Then it was all done, there was no more controversy, adn the film faded away. By censoring things, you only make the artwork more appealing, and actually make the message of hte artwork carry farther than it would have originally (hence the article from the BBC)

It still cracks me up that muslims would be offended when Saddam is disgraced. Aside from declaring himself a muslim, he showed no signs of being one. He drank, viewed pornography, borrowed money (or stole may be a better term since it was clear he never planned to pay it back,) only prayed as a publicity event, and even shaved his beard. I can understand why his former Iraqi party members would be upset, but muslims in general??? What wonderful role models Islam has!
