The first drama theatre in Prague with English subtitles. Švandovo Theatre is introducing a pioneering innovation to enable English-speaking theatre-goers to view Czech performances with the help of projected subtitles. The subtitles are projected onto a special screen that is hung under the stage portal -- or onto the stage portal itself -- to avoid disturbing the theatre stage. This form of translation is used in theatres around the world, and is currently used for opera performances around Prague. Švandovo Theatre will subtitle performances in the Main Hall where its wide reperiore includes classics such as Chekhov and Moliére, as well as contemporary plays from the likes of Marin McDonagh or David Farr. Each season there are performances by Czech authors such as Václav Havel or František Langer, and those will be subtitled as well.
Lieutenant of Inishmore is a work by one of the most successful young English authors of the present, Martin McDonagh. The story takes place on the Ireland‘s Inishmore Island. Apart from the simple country people seeking “the peaceful life away from it all,” other characters include a teenage female anarchist and a young terrorist. In the end, the young anarchist and terrorist find their love for fluffy, innocent, four-legged friends stronger than their affection for the terrorist organization that employs them. The performance is directed by Daniel Hrbek, the director of Švandovo Theatre. David Farr‘s Elton John´s Glasses is an English comedy filled with comic situations and grotesque accidents reminiscent of the darkest nightmare. A story of two brothers who meet each other after a number of years, the narrative also manages to incorporate two British phenomenons -- football and rock music. David Farr´s most successful plays can make an audience laugh and to cry at the same time. One of the more interesting contemporary British authors, Farr‘s worked in the National Theatre, Gate Theatre and Bristol Old Vic. A few years ago he also directed Joe Penhall´s Some Voices for Prague´s National Theatre. The School For Wives, Moliére’s play from 1662, has a plot as classic as the author. It’s a story about men and women, old age, growing up, and the great foolishness of mankind. The main character, Arnolphe, is a ripe, assured man in his best age, who has decided that he will not to be deceived in his future marriage. He plans his marriage precisely by educating his future wife, from her early childhood, to be dutiful and loyal. But, as the world of comedy continues to turn over, it is in wrong direction. The child becomes a young, desirable woman with her own conception of a husband and the future. Ivan Řezáč won the Thalia Award for best actor in 2005 for his performance of Arnolphe. Václav Havel´s The Beggar´s Opera could be taken as an amazing lesson in the power of words, which can be used not only to communicate, but also to manipulate people. Based on the famous play by John Gay from 1728, Havel created the piece in 14 scenes. The premiere was 30 years ago in Horní Počernice, and since then it has played in Italy, Hungary, France and other countries. Ultimately put to film by Jiří Menzel. Modern policy and its ways had to be born somewhere and The Beggar´s Opera indicates that it was somewhere between an obscure London kitchen, a filthy pub, a doubtful police station and cheap whorehouse. Uncle Vanya is one of the best plays by Russian master of psychology and bitter comedy, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. It´s a story of love, vodka, a hot summer, and lost ideas. Periphery is another Czech play in Švandovo‘s repertoire. It´s a famous Czech play from´30s which was very popular between wars, especially in German-speaking countries. Director Max Reinhardt staged it very successfully. Periphery is about a world in which the search for truth has a strange face. Sometimes you need luck to get all that you‘ve earned. Sometimes it’s possible to meet your fatal love and kill a man in the same day. And sometimes you could wander through streets or dance until dawn. But in the end you´ll have to face your own life. Periphery is similar to a Czech version of Crime and Punishment -- a love story minus the happy endings. Bombs, Money and Love is a classic Italian-style Commedia dell‘arte under the direction of Italian director Antonio Fava. The world famous Italian director, actor and pedagogue, Maestro Antonio Fava prepared a comedy for Švandovo Theatre. Fava’s productions unfold the Commedia as a total vision of our world and the wealth of human types, relationships and situations. Commedia dell‘arte is not just a mime, a dance, a circus or a street theatre. It´s a total theatre, it´s life in its complexity. Bombs, Money and Love is a great comedy about young lovers, their fathers, and the madness of love and war. It´s comic and tragic at the same time, but the laughter always wins. Don´t wait too long and book your seats in Švandovo -- modern, open theatrical space for audiences from all the worl
