Hidden away on a tranquil Prague square, on the cobbled streets leading down to Charles Bridge, U Malířů is one of the city's very best French restaurants.
Occupying a historic 15th century building, which gained its name ("At the Painter's") when an artist made his home there in 1543, U Malířů's painted ceilings and frescoes add to its refined old-world ambience.
Importing many of its ingredients, including a wide array of fresh seafood and fish, U Malířů offers a classic range of French cuisine, prepared to the very highest standards.
House specialties include Baked burgundy escargots with spiced butter and toast; Tiger prawns flambé with Pastis, fennel and sun-dried tomatoes; and fresh oysters. Two degustation menus, meanwhile, give diners the chance to sample a range of U Malířů's signature dishes, over four or five courses.
For the more conventional palate, there's also an ample selection of meat, game, poultry and fish dishes, a splendid selection of French and Czech wines, and a choice of sumptuous desserts.
Pálffý Palác owner Roman Řezníček bought U Malířů in 2006, adding to a portfolio of restaurants, clustered on the Vltava's left bank, that also includes Sovovy Mlýny and U Zlaté Studně.
One of Prague's most celebrated restaurateurs, the new owner is committed to maintaining U Malířů's high culinary standards, while adding a touch of informality to what had been a somewhat stuffy dining experience.
