The huge, imposing Žižkov TV Tower (Žižkovská televizní věž) rests atop a hill in the Žižkov district, from which it takes its name.

With a height of 216 meters, three large cylindrical tubes and three observation decks, the TV Tower is impossible to miss, even if you tried.

Construction of the tower began under Communism, in 1985, but wasn't completed until 1992.

Because of its connection to the regime and the removal of parts of a Jewish cemetery from its base, its construction was controversial.

As the tower neared completion, fears grew that it was designed to block foreign radio broadcasts and that it emitted carcinogenic waves.

Today, the tower handles regular TV and radio signals, fixed-line and mobile phone networks, cable TV, and radio networks for Prague's emergency services, and is also used to monitor the city's air quality.

It became something of a work of art in 2000, when well known Czech artist David Černý's black, metal babies were attached to its exterior.

Despite some local objections, the rod of steel attracts many visitors. An elevator takes visitors to the eighth floor, its doors opening onto one of the best views of the city.

The tower also houses a café and a restaurant with panoramic views of Prague.
