Howdy y'all - happy monday - would greatly appreciate any recommendations for old CZ films. Have been getting into renting them and need some tips as the list is long from PlanetDVD.

Last night we watched: Coz takhle dát si spenát (1977)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074354/

Great - funny movie with nice absurd CZ humor....

[ on side note - for those looking to improve CZ language skills, this is great way to learn a little while enjoying yourselves.... ]

Some classics:

The shop on the Main Street (Jan Kadar & Elmar Klos, 1964)
Closely Observed Trains (Jiri Menzel, 1966)
Diamonds of the Night (Jan Nemec, 1964)

Don't know about the CZ DVDs, but the Criterion tranfers are excellent. Also, anything else by Menzel or Nemec would be good.

Vera Chytilova and Jaromil Jires are great if you're into surrealism:

Daises (Chytilova, 1966)
Valerie and her Week of Wonders (Jires, 1971)

Some great comedies:

Lemonade Joe (Oldrich Lipsky, 1964)
Vrchni, Prchni! (Waiter, Run For It!) (Ladislav Smoljak, 1980)

And one of my personal favourites, though the Czech DVD here has no english subs:

Adele Hasn't Had Her Dinner Yet (Lipsky, 1977)

Let me know if you've seen any of these, or would like some more suggestions.

For those of us looking for a bit of slapstick comedy to help hone the language skills, Kamenak (1-3) are very good (and funny).

Not gonna even mention how awful the Kamenak films are.....just so base and commercial, faux-hollywood shite.......

But I don't know if 2003-2005 qualifies as "Old". Maybe 2003, I guess.

Alex - go rent "Lemonade Joe". Now THERE'S slapstick comedy.

Spalovac mrtvol - based on the surrealist (?) novel of Ladislav Fuks, Citizen Kane meets the Dalai Llama. I'm not sure I "got" it, but it looked nice.

Slunce, seno, erotica - Fucking funny. Czech self-reflexive comedy at its best. A group of "model" villagers are chosen to visit an Italian communal farm.

Perlicky na dne - Another Hrabal/Menzel thang. Kind of a Czech new wave business, based on 5 of Hrabal's short stories.

Skrivanci na niti - More Hrabal/Menzel. This should be required viewing. Fantastic, depressing. Based on Hrabal's time working in a miserable factory in Kladno.

Post?™i??iny - from Jiri Menzel, possibly better than CWT.

If you're into surrealism and fantasy, Karel Zeman's Baron Prasil (1961), made at Zlin Film Studio which Bat'a built for advertising and marketing their shoes.

Baron Prasil inspired Terry Gilliam's Baron Munchausen (1988). Zeman says more with less, using inexpensive props and sets, to create an otherworldly feeling. Come to think of it, Tarkovsky did the same.

Spalovac Mrtvol /The Cremator is a beautiful disturbing film by Juraj Herz. Shot in black and white, starring Rudolf Hrusinsky (better known as good soldier Svejk) as the cremator in the late 30s who becomes obssessed with purifying the world, reincarnation, the Dalai Lama and then recruited by the Nazis for Auschwitz. One of my favorites.

Didn't see Marketa Lazarová listed here--apologies if I missed it--but it's a unique piece about an era of human transition, from pagan to Xtian. Read IMDB synopsis and review from Czech.
