Hello!

My name is Matthew Howie and I am very interested in my family history. My dad's mum, my nanna was originally a Bradtke. From what I know, the name Bradtke means 'little brother' in the Sorbian language. The Bradtke family lived near Cottbus, or Ch???›ebuz, and ended up coming to Australia to live. I have learnt a great deal from my "Bradtke Family History" book, but I still want to know more about their history. I was wondering if you could give me some information on the Sorbian Language or give me some links to pages which teach the language and teach its relation to the Czech language as well.

Thank you!

Try Wikipedia

The Sorbian language is much like Czech. The towns of Cottbus, Gorlitz and other towns from the northern Czech border to Brandenburg were the traditional homes for the Sorbs. In Czech they are known as Luziky Srbsky- Sorbs of the Lusatian River.

The name of the town Dresden comes from a Sorbian word, Drez'den.

Good Luck.

Hi Matt,
I had a quick look on Google and found an institute dedicated to Sorbian culture and language in Bautzen, Germany:
http://www.serbski-institut.de/

The Texas Wendish Heritage Society website might also be of interest: http://wendish.concordia.edu/

All the best,
Sam

If you go to Bautzen there is a restaurant run by Sorbian people who may be able to help you. Bautzen is a small town, so if you ask around people will show you where it is.

I was looking for a bit of Sorbain language online too,and I found a couple of words, just simple hello, goodbyes.

Im from Texas, and im Half Wendish.I was wondering if there is some type of scholarship for being of Wendish,Sorbian blood. I mean theres plenty of African American,Colored Eyes..there should be one for this race, its a small ethnic minority.
