I've been hunting around for information on English-language literary events or theatre or music and I'm struggling to come up with anything. Is the " Left Bank of the 90s" officially dead?

Hello Farnaby -

Well... Alchemy, which was hosting some poetry events, seems to have died, but i would say the scene sill lives. Shakespeare and Sons hosts semi regular events. The Englsih theatre scene is also very quiet these days, but one can find the occaisional show. I think the truth of it is that there was never a real 'Left Bank of the 90's' so it couldn't have died. It's true that it's more difficult to live here on a couple dollars a day, so maybe some of the more avant artists have left for cheaper towns, but one can still find inspiring creative work being done here. Maybe though one needs to look at the city as a whole and not simply 'expat' events. (That word 'expat' has acquired a more and more negative connotation over time here: So maybe also it's good that it has 'died' as you put it .. :)

farnaby - there are many czech musical acts that perform in English and some theater that has English subtitles. The music scene here is very good so I would encourage you to drop the expat label and just get out and see stuff. See our events picks for some ideas. I go to shows all the time here and have been very happy with the stuff I've seen in the last year. I am sure 2006 will be better. Look for any Respekt concerts if you like good "World" music. Their shows are always quality.

www.am180.org always has a good listing of good concerts. most of the bands are from the states, so they do sing in english if this is a must for you. In terms of the Expat scene, god I hope it is dead because these "scenes" tend to make me crazy. My annoyance with the term expat is only trumped by "the left back of the 90s" sorry but I cant understand why this keeps coming up after pretty much everyone who has lived here over 6 months knows it didnt ever exist in the first place. It s taken on the form of a meme that wont die, but is absolutely false. I m sad that Alchemy ended, however I am never disappointed with the shows that I have available to go to. Yes they may be some czech bands, however, I mhappier to see czechs making music I like as opposed to American bands, well I take that back. The locust show was fucking amazing

agreed with pacman, the words expat and left bank should be grounds for deportation... however, to answer your question ( and who the hell knows how to define a scene ) i just got this from twisted spoon... ( props to howard for keepin it goin )

I ran a "writers" magazine here from '95 to '00 called Optimism Monthly.
Online version still around:

http://www.home.nextra.cz/~optimism/

Back issues sporadically at The Globe.

The scene here died round 98-99 when prices went up, but the mystique lives on. See local indie film "Rex-Patriots" by Nancy Bishop for complete debunking procedure and local jokes galore.

The true lore was captured in zines like "Prognosis", "Think", "Riding Black" and "Unpronouncable Symbol" Cynical, smart satire for jaded immigrants.

New "Prague Revue" from Jama crew sometime this winter will certainly be bo-ring!
Sleepy over-read vanity project but good for lining my hamster cage.
Oh yes. Blaq mummy DOES rock! Long live the Mumster!
