I've was in Shanghai for the last three years and will be moving to Prague shortly after my stint back in Texas chilling at my beautiful show cave. After three years in China I know the question to ask about a new city. What sucks? I'll be teaching english which I know is not the best gig but it's a good transitional job. Are there lots of teaching jobs? Are the employers cheats? Are flats costly to expats? What's the visa situation? In China all one needs is a business visa to get a place and work, is the CR the same? Give me the expat insider scoop guys and if you're interested in "booming" China I'll reciprocate with my experience. You know, once bitten by the expat bug, home is never the same.

WTF is a show cave? You related to Batman?

There is a ton of information in the archives. Both here, and on expats.cz

Check those out, because you've just asked the same questions everyone else asked before they came.

There are lots of teaching jobs, some employers are cheats, some not, flat rental prices have been going down a bit of course coming with dollars you mitght not agree as the dollar lost quite a bit to the krown recently. Still you can find rooms in shared flats for quite cheap, and if you are not scared to live out of the city center (still only 15 minutes by metro) you can find some decent affordable accommodation. You will have to apply for a work permit and 1 year renewable residency permit to work here as an American, you could work without it I suppose, it depends on the company, but I would advize you to go the legal route, plus you will get to experience the joys of the Czech foreign police kafkaesque residency proceedure, a must for true expat assimilation.

good luck

oh worst thing? rabid goat mounted monkey jousting, a famous bohemian past time involving drugged up spider monkeys wielding electric cattle prods forced to wear metal chainmaille and joust to the death on beer filled goats. Not sure where the tradition came from, or where they got the monkeys, but they breed them up in Liberec. Technically the sport is illegal, but just as cock fights are looked over in Texas, so too are these bizarre and cruel death matches.

I would have them banned personally, other than that, Prague is a fantastic place to live.

Flats are easy to find and cheap. Basically 5 to 10000 krowns a month if you are rooming with someone. 8 to 15000 if you want to live alone. I really don't know about the teaching english situation here as I ve never done it, but I have friends who have no college education, no visa, and no TEFL, and they stll make around 300 Kc for an hour and a half. The toughest thing to adjust to will most likely be the language, but if you were in CHina I imagine you are prepared for this. Other than that, the most annoying thing to me personally are expats who complain all the time, but never seem to buy a 1500 krown ticket out of the country, and there are a lot of them here, complaining about how their life sucks while they drink their 13th shot of rum.

thanks for the expat.cz site and a show cave is this http://209.35.235.166/cwan/preview_html/thumbnails1.html
the cave is a nice place to chill after three years living among 20 million trash throwing, hacking/spitting chinese in shanghai.

Texas Ranger, 3 years in China and all you learned are cliches ?
Welcome to Prague, you will feel right at home. Get ready for smelling passengers on the trams, unfriendly cashiers, cheating waiters, ... you plug in with your peers, 1 beer 1 cliche.

The only thing about the Czech Republic that really gets me, after two years here is all the waiting you have to do to get something done; it doesn't drive you mad, or anything, just be prepared, things take longer here than in the US. Otherwise, dogshit aside, it's not as polluted as China, if that's what you're worried about. It's really a great place.

The dog shit really does suck. I clean up after my dog every time. Why doesn't everyone else?

When I was passing Letna the other day, I saw a couple walking 2 huge Bernese Mtn Dogs, off leash. They ran some 100 ft away and shit, while the owners watched. They stopped and waited. And then kept on going, without cleaning it up.

*Maybe* excusable for a chihuahua owner once in awhile.

But not for a BMD!!

Also, aside from pick pockets, whose hands should be stuck in the excess dog "darky" which are left around the city streets, Prague is a very safe city.

Pacman, in your other post you siad 200 euro a month is enough! But here you say "Basically 5 to 10000 krowns a month if you are rooming with someone. 8 to 15000 if you want to live alone"
I assume you are excluding 2000 a month in utilities, and the fact that at those rates, you need to live with strangers? Yes, you could live alone for as little as 10-11K a month, +/- 2000

And here your also concur with the large numbers of expats that are clueless idiots, essentially ruining their futures (or what do you call walking around drunk as doing)???? Keep in mind that 20k Brits vs. 800 USA says something.

My point here is the same as in the other post, "Arabs push". Factor in the cost of living with the average wage and Prague is very expensive, especially if you will need to buy something other than food and pay your mortgage...50k in the states gives you MUCH more purchasing power than 20K here does

Kraska - "Why doesn't everyone else?", "Why don't Czechs".... Is there something we should know?? You sound sort of unhappy....

oh, the ongoing battle of KP. I was responding to the fact that this person wanted information about the price of things in Prague. I don't think he's coming here to buy real estate or start a family, or buy a new ipod. When you first arrive in prague, one expects to pay more. then as I scouted out different apartments, the price went down. I always tell people to bring more money than they think they need, because inevitably you end up spending more on drinks, entertainment, and everything than you initially expect in those first few months. This person is an english teacher, ok, you can tell him to not even bother to come because you made all the money there is to be made here buying up real estate in the 90s but I don't think he s interested in that. Face it. He probably wants to experience a different culture and travel the world with the skills that he has. whats wrong with that? And by the way, I never disagreed with you that there are a lot of going nowhere expats here. I avoid nebe, and these places like the plague, I am also half czech so I am in a different position than most expats who plan on coming here for a year, then returning home. But there is a demand for english teachers here now, this will probably change in the years to come as more and more czechs begin to teach at higher levels. The same reason why there isn't really a huge demand for english teachers in sweeden, or Norway, they already speak very good english there. I ll still stand by my claim, that this guy whos coming here, will most likely find a job, get paid around 300 kc an hour, and find a flat he can afford. so at that rate, for his year, or two in prague, he'll most likely be working less, and have an experience of living in a foreign country. Is it good for his future? I don't know, and I don't think he really cares, I think he most likely just wants to experience something different, and get out of the states. I m interested in the numbers you put up about brits vs americans living in Prague. Where do they come from?

webdrinks, why you stalking me?
[ anonymous ] - [anon] Sun Nov 20th 23:04 2005 / #16
hey pacman you got it right, it's the experience not the bucks that appeal to me, greed sucks. i also agree there are loser expats they were all over shanghai in my opinion a lot of people leave their home country because they are losers and think they can bs foreigners to believing they are not. fact is a loser is a loser and a drunk is a drunk wherever they are. my goal is to make a living wage, not get caught up in greed, experience a culture that is unfamiliar, make a few interesting friends, save a few bucks then travel around and come back to my base in prague and work some more. i did that in china and it afforded me the oportunity to live with monks in tibet as well as travel all over china and south east asia. my reason for this post is to get a good idea of life there, see if prague for a couple of years would be a good base for an eastern european adventure and most important if the place is an amicable place to live. sooo how much money does one need to live an average life there and save a little for cheap travel? is 300 kc an hour enough?

Yeah don't worry just come to Prague. Best part is the prices for train trips to other cities in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia, etc. are so cheap that it is a good base place to live.

KP is right: Arabia is the future.
Just look at how many US backpackers there are today in Mesopotamia - carrying real backpacks, most of them dressed in nifty khakis (branded Banana Republic in honor of both the country of destination as well as the country of origin). Shame the natives are treating them rather badly: surly shop assistants not willing to break a 100 dollar bill, cheating waiters charging them for 6 green teas when they only had four, suicide bombers by the roadside, and hey, worst of all, still only old reruns of the Simpsons on TV. It is tough exploring the world beyond Kansas.

Plenty of beautiful American women happy (read: too stupid to know better) to marry in return for being spoiled. Men who come here to find something pretty usually can't get it in their own country.

By the way.. is your last name Glitter?

You won. You chased me away. The last thing I need is a loud annoying butch woman to stalk me online.

Webster makes this cool book with lots of words in it. Ask Santa for one.

"Away" usually means somewhere other than "here".

If you're going to get dramatic and run off with your toys, the impact would be greater if you stayed gone more than a few minutes.

I too am somewhat disturbed by this. Every other morning it seems I wake up with monkeys wearing chainmail in my bed. This inconvenience is mildly perturbing.

you mean, women who haven't had their mind destroyed by the conflicting and opposite ideas of american nazi-feminism, and their own instincts as women? we can take you as a good example. yes, men have left the usa for that reason, you are right. now what are you doing here? not reprogramming yourself, unfortunately.

You are all right. Especially #27 and # 29. But hey, if girls are your thing dont come to prague, go to china.

You can buy girls there - literally. Join the hordes of fat morons who love having s*x with girls who look 20 years younger than they are. And enjoy living in a culture where people smile every day - they are happy right?

Well who wouldn't be? You can spit and piss and sh*t anywhere you please. Its great! Just the way nature intended. Hope you like contracting TB while your at it.
