I am a 32 year old black male from the U.S. I was in Prague last March 2005, and had a wonderful time. One of my disappointments, however, was that most of the pubs/clubs I went to had more tourists than Czechs. Can anyone recommend some places to check out in the evenings where I can enjoy a good beer and socialize with some local folks. Although I consider myself an attractive guy, I'm married and not looking to "hook up" with a woman. By the same token, I enjoy socializing with both men and women. I'm not sure that's relevant, but I want to make it clear that I'm looking for cool places to meet people and not a meat market where the primary goal is shag.

Hi There,

In the city center you'll of course find mostly tourists. A good local pub with a mix of foreigner's and locals, with good food and such is Fraktal. The beer isn't the best you'll find in the city but the vibe is what your looking for I think.

Here is the link.

There are lots of other places that come to mind as well. Do you know where you'll be staying? If so I can reccommend places closer to your hotel/accommodation.

BTW the way to stay is to rent an apartment. Cheaper than a hotel and reall a good way to see a neighborhood and find some cool local places.

Hope this is helpful.

This is very helpful. I don't know where I will be staying yet, but I'm willing to remain mobile and go wherever the party is regardless of where I'm staying. So, if you have any more suggestions I'm all ears. I appreciate the info on the apartments. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Will do. In the mean time, I plan to visit some other town in the country during my visit. Can anyone recommend the "must see" towns outside of Prague?

Hey there the town of Tabor is a great day trip (1.5 hours each way by train) with a nice center and it's very historic. For instance the dam and water-towers were completed in the year 1492. Also Jan Hus, sortof the Osama Bin Laden of his time, ruled the place for years slaying Swedes, Catholics, Adamites and anyone else who got in his one-eyeballed face. Speaking of which a pub worth checking out in Zizkov is called the Shot Out Eye. They even have concerts there and there's gonna be one in May that... uh ferget it.

for "anonymous": Czech republic is a country of little picturesque towns situated in nett uplands, which are non-known by foreign tourists, but open to welcome you. In central Bohemia= closed to Prague (up to 80 km/50 miles) I can fully recomend to visit towns of: Beroun, Kolin, Kutna Hora (UNESCO), Litomerice, Melnik, Nymburk, Rakovnik. A bit more far from Prague (up to 160 km/100 miles) you can find regional centres of different regions: Plzen southwest from Prague, Ceske Budejovice in the south, Hradec Kralove in the east, Liberec in the north, Pardubice in the east (all with population about 100,000). As well as smaller towns: Cesky Krumlov (UNESCO), Cheb, Chrudim, Decin, Domazlice, Frantiskovy lazne, Jicin, Jihlava, Jindrichuv Hradec, Karlovy Vary, Klatovy, Liberec, Litomysl, Louny, Marianske lazne, Nove Mesto nad Metuji, Pisek, Prachatice, Roudnice, Stribro, Tabor (mentioned by V), Trebon, Turnov, Zatec... Well, I mentioned too many of them :), but it is difficult to make prefers...

I heard a rumor that Charles Bridge is closed, or will be closed soon for repairs. Can anyone confirm whether this is true and if so, it will be closed?

They're going to repair it but it won't be closed:
