I like some of it, particularly the folk rock like Czechomor. Problem is, sometimes I hear something I like, and I don't know who it is, because my Czech skills aren't good enough. Not a big fan of some of the more popular bands, like Kabat(tired eighties metal retreads) or that one group that sings the "you are you are you are" song, whatever it's called. But have heard some good stuff. |

I wouldn't say KABAT is metal band, its more like funny songs which are good when you drink and dance if you can still stand up....lol.
I guess you really need to understand the texts speacially one song, its called "MODERNI DEVCE" and then you will understand why people like them so much |

At the nu-metal end of things, I very much like Gaia Mesiah. Best live performance I've seen by a local band, some great tunes, and I can follow the lyrics too...
I think art-folkers Gothart are damn good, especially their later stuff when they add in that mad Pixies-style bass on some of the tracks.
Psi Vojaci have done some great stuff, although i can't help suspecting I got here about a decade too late to catch them at their best.
In the ska camp, Fast Food and The Chancers both make for a fine evening of skanking.
Most recently, I've been really quite impressed by Certi Ve Stodoli. Saw them last week, they've got a really tight post-punk thing happening in a Bloc Party/Gang of Four vein.
All in all, thumbs up to the local scene, there's a lot of stuff happening that I like.
Any tips for us, Czechdude? |

Sexy Dancers, I think? Aren't bad, despite the name. As far as funny songs go look no farther than TV's Popstars singing in English , Paul McCartney will be spinning in his grave. I should ehem, mention I only watched it once. |

Sorry to put it bluntly, but Czech music sucks. That is, contemporary Czech rock and pop bands. The big, fantastic exceptions: Cechomor (as others here have noted) and Jaromir Nohavica. The rest are a different story. Support Lesbians are so ridiculous. Mnaga a Zdorp - suck. Machacek should definitely stick to his day job and give up Mig 21. And on and on. Meanwhile, Czech folk music (real Czech folk music) is wonderful but completely ignored β especially by Czechs β and the few great local musicians like Roman Pokorny, for example, are also relatively unknown. There is tradition and at least some talent here, so Iβm not ruling out something great in the future. But at the moment, itβs slim pickins. |

in terms of sopport lesbiens, and the rest of the pop I would agree they do suck, but there is a small (very small) underground scene here where you can still be surprised at times. Czech and Slovak noise for example is great, and a treat for me (as a lover of noise, and hardcore industrial) to see in a normal sized venue. |

Vasek Havelka (aka Selfbrush) is one of the best local live shows I've seen. Phantoms on Fire are fun, if you're into Misfits/Dwarves style rock and roll love. I also dig that Tabor thing - Waawe, Deverova chyba, Sunshine. Also some of the older stuff - Psi vojaci, Jim Cert. |

I don't think it's a great language for communicating through song... It's a nice language to listen to in conversation but but to a tune it doesn't catch me.. For ex...CZ hip hop just doesn't sound right for example.. The sounds don't flow with the beat.. |

I don't care for Czech bands, on the whole, but there have been a few memorable ones:
E!E (the very first band I saw in the Czech Republic)
Dunaj
Psi Vojaci
Sunshine
Anyways, if you want to hear great American bands check out The Thrones, Lightning Bolt or, my favorite, The Vaz:

I'm failing to draw a distinction between Czech bands and bands made in the Czech Republic..There is a difference..
Chechomor is good and wholly Czech.
Squall was excellent back in the day and wholly unCzech.
The Nihilists are a bit of everything but also good. If you like electric German marching music
Lucie Bila should have an anvil dropped on her the next time she goes into one of those hyena-like warbling howls. She's wholly czech. |

Yeah Tribe I am with you, that fucking sucks and is a pitiful element of the society here, just recently I went to the Czech Footballer of the year which was live on TV. Not only were all the bands lip sinking their own songs, understanable I suppose as there is no way they could set up 10 bands of differing style in the limited amount of time, BUT worst was Lucie Vondrackova prancing around on stage with a couple of hybrid metrosexual dancers and singing......"I need a vitr..blah blah in czech to the song of , I need a hero, which by the way is a shitty song anyway, you would figure that its illegal to copy someones song and sing different lyrics to it..OR you would figure that these performers would have enough self-esteem to write their own songs, obviously they don't so let the anvils fall. |

Does Slovak music count? Cuz if so, then I just got two words: Richard Muller. Great stuff going for years now. And what ever happened to Lucie? Wait a minute...have I been here so long that I'm reminiscing about the good ol' days of Czech music already? |

The worst part is they don't just change it to czeck, then change the lyrics into something completely different. That sucks big time.

McCartney is still alive? Are you sure? Last I heard he and his wife were brutally clubbed on an ice flow in Canada for their pelts...
That being said there are actually quite a few good underground bands that pop up in odd places like Tabor and Uhurske Hradiste.
The theft of music is a travesty definitely. I heard the "doot-do-doots" from Lou Reed's 'take a walk on the wild side' changed to "pa-pa-paaaas" in the Czech version.
Why? |

Czech music sucks?? All music sucks these days, guys, come on!
Listen to Karl Kryl. I saw a Nohavice concert on czech TV a few years ago and he was playing nothing but Kryl songs to a packed audience who knew every single word. It was absolutely beautiful. Then I listened to Karl Kryl play these songs himself and I read some things about him only to find out just what kind of a national teasure he really is. It explained the thousands of people singing with Nohavice at that concert.
I remember being floored by the song "Ukolebavka" (with the refrain "a budes jako tata") and I had a crazy dream that I met him in a garden and I was raving about this guy Karl Kryl not knowing that I was actually talking to THE Karl Kryl. I told him how much the music moved me and how it was the first time I really enjoyed hearing a czech person sing. He nodded sympathetically and said, "yeah, I know what you mean."
But Czechs can sing and play music just as well as any other nationality....and just as badly. It's a pop music world, get used to it. |

Dude, the only czech bands I like you would have never heard of, as havent most of the czechs. The problem is, rock and pop generally does NOT sound good with the czech language. Its an english-speaking phenomenon. Its not just czechs, but french, italian, etc. The germans can get away with it occasionally, but for the most part, rock/pop needs to have english. |

Hey guys, I`ve been in United States for almost six years now and I can tell you that some music sucks here too. Especially the punk wannabes. I do not like hip hop and I do not like hard rock. I like pop music because I can sing along. I like nice melodies and good lyrics. Nobody mentioned Chinaski or Divokej Bill. These bands are fun. Chinaski is getting better with every record and also Divokej Bill. I`m just little curious about what you, guys, think. |

Just to be fair...I write something about music of United States I like...... It`s Michael Jackson. He`s been my favourite for long time just because he is such an entertainer and he`s got beautifull and unique voice. He`s got some great songs and he`s got some bad and cheesy ones but it`s OK. I also like R.E.M, Madonna, Tom Petty and lot of old Motown stuff. There is lot of great bands. It`s a huge country and the selection is bigger here. But one thing I can`t really stand is a country music. Maybe because I live in Nashville and it`s just too much or I don`t know....Most of the songs are pretty cheesy and cookie cutter style. Everything sound the same. |

Actually at this party at the Obcanska Plovarna a month or so ago was quite a good rockin' band. Original lyrics, tight musically, young Czech guys, a nice change from the old revival world.
Name was Simple Muffin, very cool, funky and rockin' would be a great small venue show. |

For years we've enjoyed Dejvicke hudebni leto (DeHuLe) in Prague 6. It used to happen each year in June - last year it was in September, at Kulatak for a change. It's always a wonderful experience, with great music and great vibes, lots of Czech bands and mellow people in attendance - right up there with Chicken Day as a Prague event not to be missed, in my opinion. I recommend it highly, but don't know when it's slated for this year (they seem to keep it quiet, to ensure a friendly, intimate crowd). Also, Jan Burian is a treat - Randy Newman was enchanted by him one night many years ago, and that's good enough for me... |

Ohm Square and Southpaw are great at small venues like the Roxy, Support Lesbiens and Ready Kirken are great live at larger, outdoor festivals. Bought their albums but have been disappointed. Perhaps that's a question of low production values. |
