There are occasional English-language comedy nights in Prague but nothing regular and - as far as I know - nothing going on right now. If anyone knows different, please let us know. |

A few years back some fairly good UK stand-ups were booked through the Irish Bars. I'm guessing it's hard to make the whole enterprise pay for itself. The comedians generally do two or three shows a night back home. Be interesting how many would turn out for a two act show. I'm sure a lot of Czechs and other non-native English speakers would come along if marketed well. |

I think part of the problem would be that a lot of comedy (stand-up in particular) is observational and Czech (as with all) society is very protective of its 'foibles', and not particularly good at laughing at itself. |

Considered there are atleast 400 international students at CVUT SOME of them definitely would come. Just put posters around the school and student kolejes + perhaps I can help promoting it. Hope someone there sees the potential. |

reply to CC: Then someone have to teach them :) I myself love Pablo Francisco. He have only done one DVD - but it is great. Really like comedians that make alot of strange sounds, ironi and can laugh about themselves and society. Also like comedians that adopt to the audience and can "make a joke" on the fly. |

CC, the best thing would be English comics taking the piss out of the English so everyone else can join in.
The British prefer being the butt of jokes as we know for sure it's correct, and so funny.
I'm sure a top drawer comedy routine could be put together using material put together from previous posts on this site. I don't mind doing the spade work if someone else performs? |

Hurrah for the Prague fringe folks. Actually the British Council could push this a bit more, like they do in other expat cities around the world. Yes, I think they already support the annual Prague Fringe Festival in June but something on a regular (monthly ?) basis would be nice. Might also attract a better kind of English punter than stag parties do ... Best Czech stand up comedian is of course V. Klaus - everyday a one liner guaranteed to eat your hat. |

Tried to search for the Prague Fringe on google, and found this: http://www.praguefringe.com/ - but this seems to be in June as Saint Juste said. I could not find any information on where or when there are some comedy acts this month. Any additional information would help.
To differe my other question - any czech comedians that is not also trying to be politician or head-of-country ? :) |

Hi, I am a female Dutch/Mexican comedian living in Amsterdam and will be traveling to Prague in January. I was seraching for open mic nights to perform in this lovely city but unfortunately I couldn't find a place. Has anyone got an idea if and where there might be a open mic night. (From all the sighs above I understand stand-up comedy isn't very hot at the moment in Prague.)
PS.Siggen, Skin and CC how'bout we collaborate and put up a show during my stay there?
I'm up for it if you are! I'll be in Prague from the 5th till the 9th of january. so I could perform one of those days!
If you're up for it my e-mail is: oliveertje@hotmail.com The only thing we would need is a bar who would host it and give us free publicity. Maybe someone could post a few posters at CVUT? I've got a friend that is from Prague itself and could maybe suggest a bar we could host it in.... |

all those comments above are three years old already.
I don't know of a standup comedy scene but you might try infiltrating a karaoke night with a few one liners? Try Globe cafe for a venue because they've done open mics in the past. |

I still don't understand why threads that have been inactive for so long are not locked. |

Hay all,
A friend (Neil) had this idea, and I am as promissed following it up...
Stand-up comedy nights, regular ones, but with an open mic - without searching for big acts, we open the mic up, budding funny-(wo)men say their bit, if the crowd likes what they hear, they show their appreciation by throwing money in a bag - the comedian takes home what he earns, the bar earns on drinks, we all laugh, the well paid comedians might come back... I design the posters / flyers and the lucky pub can pay for them (and a web page if necessary, I am after all a designer ;) and everyone is happy!
If you are interested, please, please show your support on this thread (or admin, please make a new thread for this) so that I can show it to some bars (Jama springs to mind) and see if they fancy running with it...
It could end up as a great laugh and a chance for a lucky bar /comedian to prosper for all!
Have fun
Jamie
ps - I am not doing this for profit, I just NEED some good, funny, English stand-up comedy!!! |
