I am in a very similar situation, except from the US and while artistic it's no longer my career. I relocate in six weeks with a teenager. We will both be attending school. By far the scariest, most daunting thing I've ever done, and it's definitely keeping me up at night - asking myself over and over - am I absolutely insane. However, we've both got a positive attitude and are embracing the adventure, together. I'll let you know in a few months how it goes. Good luck!!

Thank you so much for responding. Its really comforting to know that im not alone on this planet, theres another freedom loveing parent out there. Iv been thinking about it more and more, studying would be a great way of establishing a network of people around you and your teenager. My kids are 7 and 10 ,I was going to home school but it would be better to send them one of the english schools. So they can develop new freindships and so could I. Only prob Are these school tooooooo expensive? Could some please enlighten me .

Hi Jena, hi Ruzena!

I am also a single mum thinking about relocating to Prague. I am from Vienna and I am looking for contacts in Prague to find out how schools are like, which ones are good, ... My daughter is 11 and is looking forward to this "great step". I feel like Jeno, staying up at night and asking the same questions again and again ... But in total it is positiv and a great challange and chance for us.
Maybe you have already first impressions and experiences made in Prague?

Best thing I've ever done - for me and my daughter. She is far happier here than she was in the US... and while we've faced some challenges it's been wonderful. There are definite challenges however. I am very fortunate that she's a bit older and quite mature and has fully embraced the adventure - making it a point to step outside her comfort zone and reach out in new situations. Definitely find a school for your child/ren - they will need the social stimulation... both for their personal development but more so in order to assimilate and make this place feel like home. Some are very expensive but look around and be creative... you'll find some that aren't outrageous. Good luck!

Hello, I relocated to Prague 1.5 years ago from the US with a 6 week and 3 yr. old. Granted, I have a husband, but moving here almost right after childbirth had it`s drawbacks. My husband is Czech and we decided to raise our family in Europe.
Transition was more difficult than I anticipated, especially because I am also from a creative background and was always adventurous - a lot changes with kids!! DON`T REGRET THE CHANGE ONE BIT. My girls and we are happy here, no doubt.
We recently bought and are renovating a house outside of Prague in a commuter town with a train direct to Prague every 30 minutes. There is a Czech arts-based elementary school here that is private but not exorbitant.
Since I am half-Asian, I really felt more pointed `coldness` here at first, something I wasn`t used to coming from NYC (they`re rude to everyone, they don`t discriminate), but I am learning that under several dour exteriors is a sincere, soft underbelly. And I ALWAYS have people offering to help me with the kids and strollers on public transportation.
We are finding that nannys/schooling for expats is considerably higher than for native Czechs. It is like 2 different worlds. We live off of `Czech` wages and social benefits (Czech pediatricians, etc. who don`t speak English). A French woman told me that some Czechs attend her sons` French-based private school, but the Czech students stay very separate from the expat students. Frankly, my husband has a good job - by Czech standards- but we couldn`t afford the expat schools.
On one hand, I struggle with the pressure of really having to learn this hard language, on the other, I like that I am truly integrating within Czech culture. My 4 yr old speaks English peppered with Czech and understands Czech.
Maybe it`s our social circles, but we know many Czech people who had children young and divorced soon after. Basically single moms, several with dead-beat dads, like my sister-in-law. There is a newer generation of Czech independent women who are chafing against the older `gender traditions`, as my female cousins-in-laws frequently discuss.
Best of luck with your transition. Prague is a beautiful city and Czech is undergoing quite a transformation right now! Ann

I am an American who is thinking about relocating with my American husband and 11 year old son. We are thinking it may be easier for us to enroll in University and work part-time. We plan on placing our son in a CZ school to get total immersion in the language (he is completely for this). I am an HR professional but have been home for the past five years, taking care of kids and a mother with cancer. My husband is a Telecommunications Specialist. Do you think it would be hard for us to find part time work to supplement our income? As we would be raiding our 401k's to make this move and finance our schooling. Also, I read we would have to have insurance before we come over. Does anyone know how much that will cost for a family of 3?

The word "Dollar" comes from "Thaler", which is short for "Joachimstaler" - meaning "Joachim's Valley", where a silver mine near the West Bohemian town started minting coins in 1519.
