Hi!
I'm married with two young children (3&4) and I will be relocating to Prague from New York within the year. I work for Credit Suisse and I have a fair ammount to spend (30,000Kc month+). What neighborhoods or districts would be safest, cleanest, most affluent (and have the least number of rowdy tourists!)? Thank you all so much for your help!!!

Vinohrady all the way! Prague 2 is the way to go

I think Prague 6 is the more common answer.

I am from NYC. Definitely Prague 6. Close to the international schools where your children will probably go, great pubs, clean, wide streets, some good restaurants and the most beautiful park in Prague. Stromovka. Vinohrady is nice and I've lived both places, but I would definitely Prague 6

Also if your a foodie Delvita in Prague 6 is great. They also sell the Economist which gets big points in my world

International schools for 2 kids earning 30,000kc a month, hmm.. I think not!

enobat - I think he may have meant the 30+ was just for housing expenses.
skritek skritek - [profile] Thu Feb 16th 22:00 2006 / #6
yeah he means rent. He's working for Credit Suisse. I am sure they pay their secretaries 30K

ahhh, she's alive.

Yes, Prague 6 is probably the more common answer, however,
Credit Suisse is on Lazarska, so it is much easier to get to from vinohrady. They are coming from NYC, so P6 is like a GreatNeck (a nyc suburb), they will want some nightlife, Vinohrady hands down has more goin' on. 30K in P2 will probably get you more than in P6, and there is probably gonna be more interaction with other kids. (Reigrovy, Havlickovy and Bezrucovy Sady, Folimanka, and Vysehrad parks are all filled with playgrounds, kids, etc ) P2 also has a kickass Delvita with the economist, foreign food section and murals depicting life in the first republic.

and yes enobat, Credit Suisse pays more than 30k a month, you don't move a family of 4 from NYC for 1000 euro a month job...

Credit Suisse is not only on Lazarska.

Please save the NY comparisons for someone who is not a NY'er.
pragueboy pragueboy - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 01:24 2006 / #9
Credit Suisse's CZ HEADQUARTERS are Lazarska, of course, if you wanna use that arguement, even more reason to live in Prague 2 since their other office is on ? afa?™?kova. If you are reading this, NewToCR, please share with us where you will be working, so we can better serve you...

as for the NY comments, despite your beliefs of the world revolving around you, others on this site might not be NY'ers, and thus the comparison might have helped. shouldn't you be out hunting with cheney?
enobat - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 08:14 2006 / #10
Oh yeah, you're definitely right about what the 30,000 is for.
kr??ska - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 10:42 2006 / #11
Praguerooney. You're such a child. Your comments were directed at me, and you got a proper response. And your comparison was absurb to begin with, so be glad I said it as nicely as I did.
pragueboy pragueboy - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 12:36 2006 / #12
Darling, I know you think my every thought is directed at you, but in this case, i was trying to help the person who asked the question (i really didn't expect anyone but him and skritek to know great neck), and back up my belief that P2 is a better place to live than P6 for a NY'er moving to Prague.

I didn't know you were from NY, but it does explain a lot.
As for the comparison being absurd, Prague doesn't have suburbs the way NYC does; however, i have friends in P6, for whom it takes them 45 min to get into the center, similar to great neck. There is nothing near where they live, it is somewhat suburban and rural, and for someone coming from NYC (especially if they lived in Manhattan) the lifestyle would be the same. If you think this is absurd, fine - give a better comparison, instead of just throwin' out comments like "Credit Suisse is not only on Lazarska"

I agree, if kids are goin to intl. school and they wanna live more suburban life out in the sticks, P6 is best for them, but otherwise, I stand by P2.
skritek skritek - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 13:19 2006 / #13
The sticks? I am downtown in 10 minutes on the metro and 15 on the tram. Almost equidistant from JZP or Flora. I'm not neighborhood nazi, I like both, but I must say I like the quiet of P6, the parks, the pub down the street with Pilsner from the tank, wide tree-lined streets, a good burger at U Ral, great buchty and duck at Perpetuum around the corner, a vecerka on my block open until 1 in the morning, 12 km from the airport (great coz I travel alot and it sucks to take a long ride fromthe airport to home) and if I had a family I would much rather live in P6 where they have lots of green space to go and play.
pragueboy pragueboy - [profile] Fri Feb 17th 13:30 2006 / #14
I am referring more to the area round the international school as the sticks, obviously not dejvicka or all of P6 - However, I do know plenty of people who live in P6, near or past the international school ( perhaps you know the complex known as disneyland, past sarka" who commute 45 min down town, to lazarska or safirikova, for sure...

everything you mentioned you have in P2, nonstop grocery stores, good pubs, big quiet parks. but i agree it is a preference thing...

Thanks everyone for all the responses! I really do appreciate all the comments and they will really help!

In response to some of the questions, the 30,000 Kc was for the rent...I wouldn't be relocating for a salary like that! I will be working, like pragueboy suggested, on Lazarska; I'm going to be working in the HR department here!
Where in NYC are you from Skritek? We live in Rockville Center (not technically NYC I know...) and I'm really familar with Great Neck.
The main point of contention seems to be between the merits of P2(Vinohrady) and P6. I'm not very familar with the city, can anyone explain the main differences between the areas besides their geographic location?
Thanks again so much!
kr??ska - [profile] Mon Feb 20th 01:09 2006 / #16
Well, you've surely created a monster now. Pragueroo will be so happy to know you are on Lazarska.

I'm a Queens girl, myself.

Personally, as I said before, I don't believe you can compare any area in Prague to any area in NYC. But if you would like an attempt: I would compare parts of Prague 6 with, say, Neponsit. It can be that surburban-esque and that beautiful - sans the lovely private beach, of course.

I would not compare anywhere in Prague with any area of Manhattan. Perhaps a middle-class section of Bklyn, but that's about as far as I would take it. Traffic, pollution, noise, etc are the only things I would say might compare with being in the city.

You will be able to find something nice for 30,000 kc. But do yourself a favor and look through sites like www.reality.cz and www.sreality.cz first. They do have English functions, though they will not return as many results. There you will see what the price range is for the natives.

If possible, find it on your own and then ask the realtor to show it to you. Much better results.

Good luck.

Hello,

Praque 2 and 6 best choice. Your budget is fine to find nice flat in this area. Prague 2 is more convenient, because you can walk to the center of Prague. Another hand Prague 6 is bettter if your children will atend the Intenational school in Nebusice. Both location are very good choice. Check the web site www.sunreality.cz, they are very helpful and you can trust them. I used them. NY is different, but Prague has also something special. Enjoy your staying and good luck

I've a nice, but small apartment in P6, Dejvice. Not having any kids I'm not an expert, but from what I've seen this is a great area to get the mix between good ammenities, shops, restaurants and bars, transport; 10 mins to metro then 3 stops to Old Town Square. Plus quiet enough and loads of kids running round many playgrounds.

Mind you, never lived in P2. Mind find out if I can't afford to buy in P6.
